I took up golf because my dad played.
He bought me a custom made 5 iron and putter when I was about 9 or 10 and I was hooked.

We didnt have SKY showing golf every weekend but we did watch the Masters and The Open on tele which was great.

The thing is, I watched it on TV because I played golf not the other way round.

I did have a wander around the GC with my dad and his mates as a kid. But only maybe half a dozen times. He's let hit a 9 iron every now and then when it was quiet.

Main reason I took it up was my football days were over due to being self employed and getting a knee injury that had me out of action for 8 months. Golf is a lot safer in that I won't get any other players launching themselves at me in a bid win the ball!
Its also less frustrating than football. As its only down to me how I play. No dodgy referee decisions or lazy bleedas not putting the effort in :-)

Don't regret the switch. Still go out with the football lads and do a bit of 5 a side from time to time.
Golf is a tad bit dearer though £££££

Too old, lost the love for Sunday football and getting too injured to play football meant I wanted to change to golf. Played when I was a teenager but enjoyed and loved football more so carried on with football. Got into my 30's and realised my hamstrings were too injury prone to carry on and started having a knock with my 2 best mates and we've become addicted every since.

My dad played golf and encouraged me when I was very young (5 or 6, I think). Didn't greatly enjoy it then - with hindsight I think I just wanted to hit balls and not worry where they were going and I didn't really get on with lessons.

My dad watched golf back then but I hated watching it - far too dull for young eyes and temperament! Even as a teenager/young adult I enjoyed playing but never saw it as a spectator sport. I just wanted to watch football! (Nowadays, I'm always watching golf - much prefer it to football!)

Seems mad now but as an early teenager I wanted to play more golf but couldn't get into the local club because there was a waiting list! Finally got in around 16 but all the juniors I knew at the club had been there a few years and had low handicaps. I ended up playing with younger kids and not really enjoying it much.

Didn't join as a full member at 18, kept my clubs and would play very occasionally for the next 20 years or so. Then four years ago, having not swung a club in about 6 years, I decided that I missed golf and would need to bite the bullet and join a club if I wanted to get back into it. Got hooked and here I am!

None of my family ever really played, my older brother very occasionally. I got into golf via Cricket. My club used to have golf days at local courses and a few of the lads who were actual golfers pushed me into playing saying with my batting style i should be a natural!

Really got into it when my knees gave up on rugby.

Working 7.30am - 6.30pm most days meant that committing to playing Rugby on a Saturday and training twice a week just didn't have the same appeal as it did when I was younger. Nor did getting my face bashed in on a weeknight and weekend.

After 3 or 4 years out of Sport, with only the gym as company, I decided to get into playing golf. I haven't looked back since and have only been playing locally with mates.

When I buy a house this year, I am going to join a club, and I have a feeling that could be committed for the long haul! Someone mentioned it in another thread, but I firmly believe that actually mid 20s are the age bracket golf should be targetting, because that is where more people become interested in joining, can afford it, can drive, and are moving away from team sports and nightclubs and are looking for a good way to spend time with friends still.

I started young, it was something my school did as an after school activity when i was about 5 or 6. Then started having some individual lessons.. didn't really hit the course at that age though. Started playing football a couple of years later, spots of golf in between. got my first membership at a club that i had to have an interview for and they wouldn't accept me as I didnt have a handicap, so played more football. Did village football from 10-25, playing social golf in between. Decided I didn't like village football because of the cliques and managers choosing their son's and son's best friends to play, always meeting up at 1pm not getting home til 6 or 7pm having sat on the bench so went back to golf where I got to choose my own times and played my own game.

My dad played and was a member at Wimbledon Common. I just saw his clubs and wanted to do what dad did. He booked me for a week of lessons at Sandown Park Golf Centre in the summer holidays when I was 10 and that was that. Showed a degree of aptitutde, got junior membership and played as often as I could Was half decent as a kid and wish I could go back to playing without as I did then without a technical thought in my head and finding a way to play naturally.

Hold the phone!

I had you down as a late 20's wise head on young shoulders gal, but looking at all those numbers you must be 'cough' yrs old!

Funny how you make mental pics of people :)

Sorry for the off topic

My dad played and asked if fancied a game just over three years ago, as i had my Saturdays Spare now, used to be season ticket holder at St Marys watching the mightly saints.but best mate i used to go with desided he couldnt afford to go anymore :( mainly because he has been having an affair for the past 2 1/2 years and told his wife about it !! .

Thought a season ticket was getting expensive compared to golf? how wrong was i lol :(

Ha, I'm more of a young head on old shoulders - never grew up and not planning to any time soon! Mid-forties now :(

Went to a driving range in Newark with my mate one night as we had nothing better to do, Hit a few balls and then a few days later we decided to have a go at the pitch and putt next door then the next thing we was hooked and going to the beginners courses in the area then joining a 9 hole course.

I remember having a very used single iron as a kid but no idea where it came from, that and a few 2nd hand commando golf balls meant a game of knock it through the opposite goal on the local football pitch (not really a proper football pitch)

Only dabbled with golf as a pastime over the next 240 yrs, a few rounds a year and the occasional membership but due to a wicked persistent slice I never really took it seriously until a few years ago when work mates were playing I decided to join them & play more regularly. Slice was still there & its taken several years to get it down to a strong fade :D

Got moved to the front of class in my last year of school - lad I sat next to played golf and always had a golf mag. I kept getting him to describe the holes at his course and what you had to do to play them.

I went with him a couple of times and loved it. Didn't have time to play really due to commitment to other sport.

Eventually started playing properly after a RAF posting to St Athan - which has its own 9 holer on base. Played everyday for my final 6months in the mob........hooked.

Dad has always played and got me a junior membership when i was younger but football always took priority (was playing/training 5/6days a week). Always had a set of clubs and played rounds here and there with my dad or on corporate days. Joined a club this year as a knee injury and losing the love for sunday league football has brought golf back to the fore front of my mind.

I grew up close to a driving range and used to go there and the pitch and putt every so often, I thought about getting into it but it's not the kind of thing you do on your own when your a teenager.

14 years ago..27 years old,Pub on a Friday, and a few mates have been playing for a while and were going on Regents park in bolton the following morning. Asked if I could tag along, borrowed some gear, absolutely loved it, went round in 109 and was hooked.

I knew I was going to stick with it so I Went out the same week and bought all the gear :D

I just wish I would of taken it up sooner. I've had loads of hobbies, sports etc but golf is the only one that's kept me interested.
