My golf has been pretty poor the last month or so but the one bright spot has been that I've not hit a shank for weeks...

Went to the range this evening, hit a few 9 irons, okay, out with the 7 iron, 3rd or 4th ball, shank! Then another.

Put it to one side and got my 5 iron out, big mistake, I couldn't hit one shot without it carving away to the right.

Put the irons down and hit a few drives, these were piss poor also. Tried a few more irons and 75% were shanks, gave up and came home.

Quailifer tomorrow, looks like being a fifth straight 0.1 back. :(

Easy said I know but...put it behind you. That's the range for you and I never figured it until my coach mentioned that IF you're hitting it a teeny bit heavy off the mats then it can slide the club forwards just enough to cause an unmentionable!

If you can hit some off grass before the qualifier and just stand there and plan to hit it off the toe to recalibrate...

Good luck and chin up.

got the same problem with my longer irons, I try my best not to use them if I can help it, sad coz they were my best clubs last season.

Been through the same thing recently. Had a lesson (sorry) but club now travelling on better path and hitting a lot better. Can't make a score but it will come. I'd see what happens in the comp and then decide what to do from there. If you have a horror decide what you want to although I've known players shank in warm up and go and shoot the lights out

I had the same trouble last weekend, final friday night practice before weekend comp turned in to a shanking session confidence all shot to pieces. my solution was to try and put as much weight on the heels of my feet and try to swing my arms as close to my body on the downswing as i could worked a treat i played well in my comp and no shanks.

Also i think range mats encourage shanks the club face can slide on impact towards the hosel you may be ok on grass.

Thanks for the encouragement, I tried to work out the cause while I was there but it just messed my head and the whole swing felt horrid.

You're all right of course, new day tomorrow, but I can see my trusty 9 wood getting a lot of use!

One of the new golfing God's rules....

For every RickG there's a Crow....

At least my Yin is helping Rick's Yang on the road to single figures. Remember Rick, you couldn't have done it without me.

I go to the range mainly for abit of peace and quiet ;) But its generally a waste of time. The balls are cheap and inconsistant which makes the shots here and there (well, that's my excuse and i'm sticking to it !!)

Trouble with the range is when you hit a dodgy shank you panic and scrape ball after ball trying to avoid hitting a shank and theres just no freedom in the swings.

It can be the worst place in the world sometimes.

I seem to lose a lot of distance in the range, could this be down to the balls? I Only recently started thinking about the type of ball I was playing with as I used to lose too many to justify buying decent ones!

The range that i got to, (like many other's i'd imagine) use balls simply marked "Range", no big name (although there is nothing more pleasing than getting a ball out of the bucket and its a good condition Srixon or whatever), so i don't suppose that alot of technology goes into it. Some balls sound different from others when hit, this, of course, may be down to the way i've just hit it, or it could be down to inconsistancies in the way its manufactured ?

Todays Stableford qualifier wasn't the disaster it might have been.

Didn't hit one shank (although the longest iron I hit was a 6), 13 out and 19 in for 32 total, I might even make the buffer if the low boys do me a favour and play badly.

CSS was 73 when I left, I need it to go out to 74 to buffer. At least this week it's not an immediate 0.1 back and I've got a bit of a wait for the final CSS.

Well done - told you it was the range :-)

Hope you hit buffer then onwards and upwards (in a straight line)!!

Glad it wasn't as bad as you were fearing. As for e it was an unmitigated disaster going out with 2 x double and 2 x trple bogey. All my shots gone befor ethe turn. Medal can be unforgiving. Got it round better on the back 9 for a net 76 (+6) which was good enough for 7th place in the division. Better than it could have been
