Benross are one of the really good club makers .

They cost a lot less because they do not spend loads of money on pros promoting their products.

Takomo clubs are getting rave reviews and are considerably cheaper than other more well known brands. You can use the spec AG gave you and go directly to them.

Costco also do a full set of clubs including woods from Callaway. very good value for money and probably a decent option to start with. They also do a set from Cobra in some warehouses. And may also a do a new set of their own clubs. All decent value for money.

ILG also own American Golf. But it is all actually owned by private equity firm Endless.

I have Benross irons. As per my signature. They were their “top end” irons 2 years old. I paid £146 on eBay for 5-pw. That tells you everything you need to know about the re-sale value!

However, the next point is the clubs are great. If you want to buy brand new, then they’re excellent value. If you’re happy buying second hand, then whether you’ll get *better* is subjective. But you definitely will be able to sell on again without much loss if you go with Ping or similar.

I scream everytime I hear the words, "new golfer" and "American Golf" in the same sentence.

Tell them your budget. They'll have you spending it.

Go decent quality second hand until you know more about what is what!

Any of the Ping G range from the past few years will do. Spend as little as you can now, within reason.

The Benross clubs are ok, but will depreciate quicker than a Austin Allegro!

Where abouts are you? At least, find a trusted local Pro. Someone on here will know one.

To be fair though that's only because of the passion/obsession we forumers have for the game

If I wanted to buy my first suit (substitute this for any number of items) I can get a budget functional one from George at asda, buy a quality 2nd hand one, get one from a named/respected retailer or get fitted by a local specialist tailor

All have their place and I'll get a diff recommendation depending on who I ask but it doesn't mean the suit buying public shouldn't have George (AG) as a perfectly acceptable option

I get what you mean about the Benross depreciating - but in honesty I'm not sure I could see myself upgrading again after them! But I definitely take your point.
I'm based in Oxfordshire. Loads of golf clubs around here. I'll ask the pro who I have had lessons with - didn't think of that so thanks for the tip.
