WHS doesn't work

Pity we haven't got anyone who can access the Welsh handicapping equivalent to Dotgolf and see his handicap records. We could write to him and explain why his handicap is what it is.

If the only has three cards and one of them was a level par gross round plus whatever adjustments were made for the unplayed 6 holes then its no surprise that his index is 1.6 or whatever it was.

Sounds like he is jumping on a bandwagon tubthumping to get more hits for his channel.

A stableford comp at my place on Saturday (44 entered) was won by a lad off 28 with 45 pts, 2nd was 41, then nobody better than 37.

You’ll pretty much always find that if weather is fine and calm that a high handicapper can have a really good day - just statistics as there are plenty of higher h/c guys playing. But fact that only 4 players had 37pts or more suggests that things are OK at my place.

Strangely, we had the opposite yesterday. A trophy comp in Bogey format was won by an 8 handicapper scoring +4 with a 16 handicapper second on +3. The higher handicappers did not do well.

Bogey is tough and I think higher handicappers struggle more with the ‘matchplay’ aspect that is core to Bogey format. Quite a mental challenge standing on the tee knowing that your opponent already has a par, and so I have to score a nett par to not lose the hole.

We had a Bogey Saturday.
Very strange format. Matchplay but playing for a gross score.!
I was losing my best score of my eight.

I just found if I had a putt for a win or a half I couldn’t have a real go at it because I had to think of the one coming back affecting my gross score.

Unusual in my experience for Gross score to matter in the matchplay format scoring of bogey (as I know it). Yes gross might well be used for countback, but you can do that with ‘holes up’ - and the point is that you should be able to ‘go for it’ when you need to without worrying about the next shot which might not matter in a matchplay context.

The gross score will matter for handicap though, especially as there is one of his best 8 dropping off?

Do we have to record a gross score when playing a match? And are matches an acceptable format for WHS? No. Bogey is just a field of players each playing a match against the course. You can’t mix matchplay and strokeplay….

We had a par/bogey competition on Sunday. All my hole gross scores went in, and are now on my handicap record.

Actually you can now mix matchplay and strokeplay, though not recommended. Never the less par/bogey scores are acceptable under WHS.

You do have to record the gross score when playing a Bogey competition, how else could the score be verified 😝

The issue with the par/bogey competition is that I'm aware of a number of players at the weekend who just picked up when they lost the hole, even though they had a putt for nett bogey. So, their final score for handicap will be worse than it should have been. In many cases, a lot worse, as it isn't uncommon for players to have quite a number of 1 pointers on their scorecard.

Players were told they can pick up once they've lost the hole.

You can and enter a No Return on that hole which is just a loss of hole, my point is that you can't just enter a + for a win or a 0 for a half, you have to enter the gross score. Every year we get cards that just have wins. losses and halves marked on the card.

I don't think you can anymore, not for handicap!?

Take my score for example. I messed up completely on 4 holes, and picked up. MyEG has those scores as nett double bogeys

Whereas, I also had 4 actual bogeys, that also lost the hole. MyEG has those as bogeys, not nett double bogeys.

The final Score Differential was 11.0, and that has crept into my Top 8 scores. Had I just put No Returns for the holes I bogied, my Score Diff would have been 14.2, not 11.0

Par/Bogey is not match play. It is a form of stroke play. The scoring system of wins and losses against the course resembles match play, but it is stroke play. Rule 21.3.
