Just checked scores at one of my old clubs back in Perth, winning score 45 off a 20 handicap and then
43 off a 29
43 off a 25
42 off a 23
1st single figure golfer came 15th with 37 points off a 9

Field of 180 players, lowest handicap plus 7 and a total of 26 single figure golfers.

Australia GS (no such thing as WHS) sure works well for single figure golfers.
Lowest handicap was +7!! Why is he still an amateur?!

For all our board comps, the maximum playing handicap is 24. This has been the case for a few decades and WHS has not given us cause for change.
We have plenty of other comps with prizes where the max playing handicap is higher.

For board comps, players are reminded as soon as they book-in online.

I'm sure there is a case for this to be called discriminatory.
But just like dress codes etc, if you don't like it, join another club.

He is not, turned pro earlier this year and got his OZ tour card, we let Pro's play in our events with members, they can't win anything but it gives them a game and it's also good for members to play with a Pro, also he visiting from Queensland, I assume he wanted a game there before the WA Open later this year.

Recently they had an old member now a Pro who plays DP World Tour who shot 13 under par, (58) playing off plus 7, all birdies.

Club is Mandurah CC......

Yeah you have to wonder why players with a 30-35 shot spread of handicaps are playing in the same comp, must've been a charity gig
No it was not, a normal Wednesday comp, and unfortunately the max handicap is 54........according to OZ Golf System (re WHS)

Totally agree I cannot believe they did not break the course record to maybe run 3rd.....they either need to practice more or maybe game the system and get more handicap.
No, you're right. Single figure handicappers should be absolutely outraged that their modest 37 point score is not winning by at least 5.

That is of course the range, but there's no mandate to lump all golfers regardless of ability into a single comp, does any other sport do that

Isn't it usual to have leagues, divisions, classes, bands, belts etc etc in order to split amateur players up (& often Pros) so that you precisely don't have occasions of 'zero chance' ?

Yeah I'm in a couple of different clubs, one like yours, restricts handicap to 24, the other allows higher but splits the field into 2 divisions

Our club is exactly the same. Playing Handicap Max is 24 for most competitions.

On the flip side.....at one of my clubs in OZ a bloke plays off 54 handicap, has never had more than 20 points, today he had 12 points, what is the solution to make him competitive ? he is elderly and yes I have played with him, he can par the 3's for 5 points......has even had a 6 pointer but when he gets to the par 4 & 5's it is usually a wipe before he gets to the green.

Why should something be done to make him competitive?

Thought the new handicap system was supposed to make everyone equal ? is that not why handicaps went up to 54
If having a handicap of 54 doesn’t allow someone to be competitive then it’s on the player to improve surely 🤷🏼‍♂️

How many shots does he need 70/80?

You would be outraged if someone with that many shots won your weekly stableford.

I'm outraged now when someone over 30 handicap does .....but it seems the power that be think the answer is not for someone to get lessons but just increase the handicap limit.

No amount of lessons is going to get someone who is physically limited down to a sub-36 handicap.

Not in the least bit discriminatory. It's qualification for a sports event.

I kind of agree with this, but then the answer is to use divisions and each division plays of scratch.
Leave handicapping for matchplay for which it was originally designed.
