Playing yesterday with my 13 year old son, the course was busy so a bit of a wait at each tee. on a 4 hit a wayward drive which ended up half way up a grass mound 190 yards from green.. both me and my son stood at of the mound and watched group in front putt out and move to next tee.. so went back to take my shop and hit best shot of the day .. So imagine our surprise as we got to the top of the mound to see members of the group ahead back on the tee gesturing at us.. a bit sheepishly walked up to the green where it was obvious my shot had hit one of them and apologised, a few choice words were uttered in my direction .. but I explained that I thought they had finished and cleared the green .. they then told me they had finished and couldn't see me so went back on the green to do some practice putting as there was a queue at next tee and I should have not played and it was my fault .. I would never want to hit anyone but my feeling is that it want my fault ... am I right .. At the next tee the comments /words continued in our direction so we decided to finish after 7 holes ..

I can't honestly see what you have done wrong, they had completed the hole and left, you waited correctly. The onus should have been on them to ensure that the green they had FINISHEDplaying on was still clear. You were right to apologise but an apology should have come your way as well. Hope this hasn't upset your lad too much

Idiots in my opinion. Surely they knew there was someone playing behind them, so practice putting on a green is just downright discourteous.

Ha ha don't worry about it mate, when they said they had gone back to do some practice putting I would have laughed at them and told them its there own fault followed by more laughter. Never let anyone force you off the course mate. Idiots and they should have removed them self from the green when your shot come over and they should be the ones feeling stupid for assuming no one was behind them. You did your job and waited for them to clear so its 100% there fault. Would someone practice there target practice in the middle of a war zone? No because they would get shot. There is a reason for practice facility's.

Am I the only one who's impressed that you made it to the green from 190 yards out, halfway up a mound? Well done!

As for the Darwin Award nominees, I would have been furious. I would be mortified if I ever hit anyone regardless of who was to blame. Their actions were reckless (going back on the green) and their attitude was a joke. You should have reported them. If you took every reasonable care, it's clearly not your fault. Same if someone hides behind a tree and jumps out as you take your shot - you can't anticipate another golfer being reckless.

You were unsure if you in the wrong and they took liberties having a go at you. Most people would have rightly laughed at them or torn them down a strip.

No doubt in my mind that they're completely in the wrong, and seemingly lacking in any awareness of what's going on around them or common courtesy.

Hopefully your lad understands that when these things happen on a golf course that there is then a right and wrong way to deal with it.

The world would be a great place to be, if it wasn't for.....people!!!

Your certainly not in the wrong, you waited for them to clear its there own stupid fault for going back on the green

I'd have apologised for hitting them but informed them it was very silly to return to the green, and given them an earful if they back chatted

I can sympathise as I once hit a group as they exited the green but stopped to mark the card at the back of the green... I hit a corker and it rolled to the back of the green and into the 'marker'

They fired a couple of sarcastic comments and wound me up, I should have waited a fraction longer as they knew a group were waiting to shoot at the green too. On every green after that one person would do the same, stop on the green and mark their card I was wound up and spoiled my card so you probably did the right thing and walked off.

However, in all walks of life you meet people like this. I was at a junction waiting to turn right, road cleared but a 'prat' talking on his mobile phone unaware of what was going on walked right in front of me as I was pulling out, he then made a gesture as to I was in the wrong... so I'm afraid society is blighted by the 'head up their own arse' people and sadly, we need to just accept it :)

Even if they couldn't see you, as you had been waiting on the tee for the previous couple of holes, they should have been aware that there was a group immediately behind them and not just assumed that there was no-one waiting to play to the green.

We have a hole where any drive even slightly right leaves you blind to the green- like you I normally stand on brow of hill until green clears then walk back down to my ball. I certainly don't expect to find the green occupied when I carry on after playing my shot!

Use this as an example to your boy of how NOT to behave on a golf course

No way would I of walked off, I can't stand slow play and anyone that is discourteous to people behind them. Marking cards / practice putting have no place near a green when its busy. They would be wiser not to make any snide comments on the next tee as they'll soon be walking down the next fairway and I'd have a driver (Adrenaline yardage).

I would have said 'sorry - but I saw you clear the green after finishing the hole and didn't expect you to wander back onto it as I played - and btw you won't mind us playing through now as we are a two ball and so we have priority on the course over your four ball'

been a long while since the number in your group gave you "priority"

Sorry? These days etiquette suggests that even a singleton should be allowed to play through a two, three or four ball. So why would etiquette not suggest that our two ball should be waved through by the four ball? If I was in the two ball - whether they let me through of not I'd make it clear to them where I thought 'right' in respect of etiquette lay.
