Joking aside, I got my best score last year in September - 80 at Coulsdon Manor. I was annoyed I didn't break 80 for the first time though, as after 11 holes I was only 3 over par, but only managed one more par in the last 7 holes to let it get away. This round was also notable as the only time my wife has ever played golf on a golf course. So we had a buggy, which I never normally use - maybe saving energy by using a buggy really does help your golf game? Interesting thought.

Maybe it was your wife's calming influence on you, and her ability to help you focus?

I was once on a business trip to Edinburgh and staying at Dalmahoy so I took the clubs and played in the evening. One of my colleagues (who didn't play golf) joined me for a walk as it was a nice summer evening. We chatted about work and life between my shots, it was different from a normal round as he wasn't a golfer and didn't really understand what shots I was playing. When he walked in after 9 holes I was 1 under par without really noticing it. This is a 7,400 yard championship course off the back tees, I was playing off the whites so c.7,000 yards and demanded proper ball striking. Maybe the distraction allowed me to play better, i don't know, maybe your wife could be your secret weapon?

I was about to dismiss your comment with laughter, but in actual fact I was so focused on helping her to play and making sure she enjoyed it that I wasn't thinking about my own game in the slightest so it probably did help! She's not shown any real interest in returning though. She said she'd enjoy it more if it was all short holes (i.e. par 3 course or pitch and putt probably). Can't see her signing up for full time caddy duty.

HID often walks 9 holes with me after work in the summer (Covid allowing). Hitting and chatting means I often play quite well as there's no thought of technique. Tee it up, hit it, find it and repeat.

I actually started a reply as a joke, but then realised that it could actually be a really good way of relaxing and playing well. I have no frame of reference - my wife would rather gouge her eyes out than play golf (with or without me).

I once when a 17 handicapper scored a 74 in a monthly medal. Managed to win a four day golf holiday in Spain because of it which is another story. I remember the round. Nothing spectacular, regulation golf. Two on, two putts. The next day I was playing in the finals of a Scottish casino championship where the prize was a weeks golf in Portugal. There were only about 24 of use in the finals in Tayport if memory serves me right. My drive at the first was straight down the middle. Then it all ended. Clearly someone had swopped my clubs over during the night. I was back to being a 17 handicapper. I havn't come close since to repeating it. Its so annoying as somewhere in there I know I can do it.
