Hi All,
Just wanting your views, on a touchy subject, Ive my own idea what Im going to say/do, but just wondering what you would say/do, or if u have had the same problem before

A new guy, friend of a friend, lately has joined our group(s) occasionally, and the last 2 weeks he has played in my group, 3 ball medal on satuday, and a 3ball stableford sweep the week before
The scenario is, whenever he has a putt, on same line as me, or very very close to mine, he takes up the position of standing directly BEHIND ME whilst I take my putt........obviously gaining an advantage of watching any turn on MY putt
I have on one occasion asked him to move, stating his bright red top was catching my eye, and he did so, but then scene repeats......
But I DONT want to ask the same for such a reason, and need to broach the subject again, more directly, without causing too much of a scene, as he may NOT even know he is doing anything wrong
I intend to do what needs doing myself, and dont want to use a 3rd party ( my mate ) that knows him better, as I dont feel this is the right way to do it

Any views / comments / or past experiences welcome

against the rules to stand anywhere on another plays line of putt extended backwards and forwards.

However, just say he's catching your peripheral vision and please move, if he does it again just turn your head and look at him until he does move, he'd have to be tottaly bereft of any common sense or manners not to get the message after one look!

I would just tell him it's not the done thing. In a friendly way of course. If he got arsey then I would just repeat it..........in an arsey way.
If he ignored me then I would tell him to feck off out of it.

Well if your workmate is such a good friend, I'd have a word with him and see if he can mention it to the other guy. If he's that good a mate, and a reasonable golfer, he'll understand where you are coming from.
If he get's the hump I'd tell the pair of them to feck off and go and stand watching each other putt somewhere else.

just tell him, ive had to tell someone twice. i did it to him at the last hole but stood right in the line and could have grabbed his putter. he finally twigged and has never done it again

I used to find the old xxxxx warning used to work. [not sure if you are allowed to use that word]

Walking down a fairway casually say that our group used to play with a guy who was constantly standing behind the other players lines. We all got so fed up that we avoided playing with him. Shame because apart from that he was quite a decent guy.

Just tell him it's against the rules. We all want to play by them don't we?

If he still does it just add 2 shots to his score on that hole.

If he stands close enough swing your putter back and crack him in the nuts with it. Then tell him sorry i misread the putt :D

Did you read that as two balls to the left of the cup?

I would just turn around and say that you aren't meant to stand behind a player when making a putt. 99% of people would move off and apologise. If he is in the 1% then you need to replace him before you have another game

I think that when you are having a beer after a game just be honest. "hey buddy, I dont mean to be an ass but I have noted that you stand behind me/the lads when we are putting and you cant do that within the rules. I wanted to chat you you about it off the course just so that its cool for us both, hope you understand, ill have a stella"

This is not against any rule I know.

It is in the etiquet section, under consideration for other players, but is not a rule. there is no penalty except for consistent infringement, when the comittee may take disciplinary action. There is certainly no 2 shot penalty.

Best is to just tell him where to go, Smiffy style.

Yip, a bit of research shows it's not against the rules to stand behind an opponent and watch their putt. However, and I didn't know this, it is against the rules for your caddie, partner or partner's caddie to stand behind the line of your putt. (14-2b)
