Funeral of a long standing friend last month.
He left some instructions for his own funeral. "No black or formal dress, just wear what you feel comfortable in."
Out of about 80 people, I saw one chap in a suit and two more in jacket and tie. They looked very much out-of-place and, if it had been the other way round, disrespectful.
But then they could have felt "comfortable" in a suit for this occasion.
The family asked me to be one of six pall bearers - I think they were happy with me in polo shirt and khaki fleece.
I think you simply have to ask the close family what they would like or what the deceased would have liked.
When I go, I would like it to be the above dress code.
