I don’t play in comps, so it’s not a thing for me personally.
But if I do find myself playing with a stranger / other club member, yes, I would thank them for their time and company, get in my car and leave

Everyone knows the score for me. If it's 14:30 finish I'm off to get the girls

Before that I'll pop in

My mate leaves straight for work so if it's just us I'll pack up and leave at the same time.

What do you do In comps - do you not even pop up for a drink with your playing partners etc

I generally play with the same people in comps that I do casual golf. However, we are often chasing the light and there is no food available when we finish.

I do sometimes go in for a drink, and I will if playing with someone else who wants to, if time allows after a match.

I’ve been to the club to eat when off work and passing, and have had a few Sunday lunches there as the food is generally pretty good.

But, my primary reason to be a member is to play golf. I’ve no real interest in socialising with the other members.

Depends on the circumstances. I normally play early on the weekend to allow a decent finish time to enable family stuff. Will have something at the halfway hut and usually a quick pint after. However, me and my mates also use the clubhouse outside of golf. As a meeting point if we’re having a few beers, for a meal on occasion with the wives (nice food) and also before Football matches with the kids as they can have use of the pool room.

We don't have too many in the roll up at the weekend go early on either Saturday or Sunday on a regular basis. We all have other stuff on sometimes. On a Sunday the roll up winner has to buy a round for all those playing with their winnngs so most loiter for the free drink and then go

Yeah in comps we get to put our tee times down so I'm normally out with the same lot, well it's either me and 1 mate
Me in with another group of mates who include the handicap sec
Or me in with the swindle lot
Depends what day

I play golf for fun with friends and the occasional comp. Our club has a bar and small kitchen but isn't really a "clubby" golf club.
I think most of our members are "car park golfers" who sometimes hang around for a drink or snack. I'm not much of a drinker and no longer enjoy processed pork related food, which makes up most of the menu, but I'll usually hang around for a quick coffee.
Those with family and work responsibilities probably feel like 4 hours on the course and a quick drink is all they've really got time for.

I don't eat at my club before I play, nor have a drink. I do all of that at home. I stop for a drink after, usually just one lemonade or coffee and then head back. At most I might get a toastie or tea cake afterwards, once or twice a year but having catering facilities is wasted on me. I'm not looking for that from my club.

I'm in the camp where being out 5 hours every Saturday, drive to course, play, one drink after, drive home, is enough. I may have longer days at Opens, still don't eat a full meal afterwards, but not at my home place.

Don't have time for all these things

Breakfast is 7am with the kids

Drop them off at nursery 9am

Tee off 09:30

Finish 13:30

Either stay for a drink or head home clean the clubs and change before picking them up at 15:00

I would be classed as a car park golfer though it was unintentional.

At previous clubs I have got there early and had a bacon roll and a coffee first. Last club did not open the catering until 9.30 so the food was out. The cost of the poor machine coffee was approaching that of a Costa and so did not bother with that either. I would have been happy to pay a decent amount for decent coffee.

As for after, I found the clubhouse stuffy and unwelcoming and I was normally driving anyway but as my playing partners were local, we often went to the local pub for a beer afterwards.

As i have said many times before, and I know I am in a massive minority, I love golf but hate golf clubs (at least most of the ones that I have been to).

As the Saturday late-am rollup I play in is a random draw on the day, we all (24-32 ish) turn up between 09:15 and 10:00. Most of us will have something to eat and a tea/coffee, and we’ll all be in clubhouse until about 10:20 when the first couple of groups will head to the 1st tee. We tend to not all gather afterwards…though most will have a drink and/or something to eat with their group as they come in. 10-12 will hang around until all are in for winners to be announced.

Another big mid-week rollup is pre-drawn and they don’t all gather before going out. They do however tend to hang around together afterwards.

Anyway…my Mrs has just headed out for a walk and coffee with some pals, and as I’ve got to go to the shops I’ll also pop into the the club for a coffee and chat with whoever is there and will put up with me.

Before kids I used to meet up with my uncle for breakfast before the round

He would come over from Kent early to beat the traffic so I'd join him for breaky

Grandad would then join us at 8 for the golf and he would have lunch after with my uncle

Then when my dad would play with my uncle I'd go over with him and stay for food afters

Its easy to see how everyone's variety of activities and time demands will dictate the time at the club and therefore whether they can/want to hang around before or after

Without family close by or other time consuming interests my golf and the time at the club takes up a large chunk of my leisure time. For example this Saturdays Valentine couples event is just a run of the mill pairs scramble but I'll spend at about 8 or 9 hours at the club/course which is pretty typical for a day I play golf

We did do a lot to make the place feel more welcoming with updated furniture, a decent paint job, new lighting etc and it is far better than before. We do get a lot of our female academy ladies using it after they have had a lesson or their academy sessions in the week now which is helping in that lull between the early golfers (mostly retired 5 day members who don't want to frequent to clubhouse) and the daily roll up groups. Every little helps towards the final bottom line

It’s not always the deco that makes a place unwelcoming!

I'm probably a blend of 2 and 3.

Usually will turn up 40 mins to an hour before before play, if i'm early enough I might have a coffee, sometimes a bacon sarnie, otherwise I will hit a couple of balls round our 3 par 3 holes just with a gap wedge, then spend a few minutes putting and having a chat with other members.

I always stay after for a drink but rarely have food afterwards.

I think from what I have read that there aren’t many true car park golfers as such. There will always be the group that play with just mates turn up and then leave - that’s prob the one true car park golfer as such

And most of the time that will be down to constraints of time and other things going on in life

We find those people are also the guys that bring in quite a few greens fees with mates so they contribute to the club well
