General answers on a postcard please to......

Back to the golf.

The only part of my game that gives me any hope in this tedious little sport is my pitching and chipping.

Today started exceptionally well for me. Even my driving (weakest part of the game) was 'in' today, for the early part anyway.

Then after 7 holes. BAM!!

5 iron tee shot, went off 45 dgrees to the right (I play right handed). Most pitches and chips were doing the same. It ruined what was shaping up to be a really good day.

These weren't shanks. The ball was coming off the face of the club.

My grip or set up hadn't changed. So my thoughts were that my left arm had started to dominate the downswing, causing the face to open etc. So despite thinking about not doing this, just made matters even worse. I changed to a very strong grip to correct the problem. But then I just ended up all over the shop with fats and thins.

Okay. I am suffering with sleep deprivation at the moment, but to this extent?

I did go and see my pro to have a quick word, but he was off today!! So it's over to you guys to perhaps offer a little word of advice, titbit or opinion! ;)

Being tired is of no help in my view, and I think once you start having problems like this you think too many things are wrong when there may be nothing wrong, just tired.

Every so often I go through the 'all over the place' routine, but it usually comes back on track when I throw out all golfing thoughts and just say to myself 'damn it, hit it!' or words to that effect. But it tends to happen more when I am tired, so I would look at that first Hapless.

if it happens on your next round then i suggest take a break for a week or 2 so you can forget your bad swing- maybe that would help

Totally off the cuff here....

Sounds to me like you are sliding to the left and leaving your hands waaaaaay behind. Quite common when you are tired, especially physically. You might well be sliding off to the right on your takeaway too.

When you are tired try to keep your swing smooth and compact, try thinking about hitting the ball as your torso turns through the ball, not with your arms. The temptation is to get all loose and start forcing it.

Hope this helps...

that's no compensation as they'll soon give you other things to cause sleepness nights!

hapless, been there too often.

are you swinging too hard? tiredness mental and physical, and stress might be leading you to overcompensate. just try for smooth, never mind the distance.

I was thinking about this Q? all the way round today.

Don't be too downhearted......it takes a long time to get to the stage where you can really "believe" in yourself to not lose it completely for a while mid/end round.

Off 27 or 17 or 7, it can happen, it's just less distressing (usually, I hope) for the better player, as although it can rattle, an experienced player will usually ride the storm and grind out something even after bad shots.

I can't speak for others, but sometimes I lose it completely for a hole or two and it might or might not ruin my game/card. I just go and work it out on the range, and if that doesn't work, then I go for a lesson.

You're right Dave.
I lost it today. And still came in with 35 points. Any more days like today and it'll be Saint Imurg! An absolute miracle I managed to score. Everything was rubbish but I kept getting the nett pars.
it'll come back next time - or it'll go away even further but that's golf innit?

As you're one of the nearest people to me, (at least on the Google Map thingy you are), perhaps this is the time for me to challenge you to a game. Fiver a hole?! ;)

I've never played for money either, and certainly not a fiver a hole. At my club's roundups we chip in £2 each and 50p each for the Birdie pot, with winner take all. My g/f's dad's been a member of Hartley Wintney for 35 years, and he and his mates play for 20p or 50p a hole, and I think it would just add that little bit of tension and exitement into an otherwise great game!

When I bought my Ping G10 rescue off "Midnight" on here he said about perhaps having a game one day...will have to try and set something up...should be a laugh.

Hapless,

As others have said, your not alone. I think the tiredness thing may have some substance to it though, as I have a 9 month old daughter (still not sleeping all the way through the night).

Anyway, I've been struggling recently with the same type of shot every now and again in the round. Generally around the ninth hole on our course. Shots start to come off the club, low and right, and god is it frustrating.

Some time off may help. I've been forced into a lay off the last few weeks due to Christening of my daughter and weekends away at friends, but managed to get out for a few holes last night, and shot 27 points through 11 holes.
