I used to do that, don't really know why I changed??

I started doing it because I guessed that my brain was anticipating the thing I was concentrating on (the ball) being struck and moving away, and making my eyes follow it.

The grass isn't going to move so it's a lot easier to keep your head looking where it was for longer.

Right, so people want to know what David Howell focuses on, well its the gap between the putter and the ball. really focus on the grass, even a single blade of grass. This is obviously after you have completed your set up. Thats what howeller does, and now, so do I!

Like this pic i did on paint! (the red dot is the focus point) (i should be a graphic designer!)

hmmm what I like about this is making me leave a gap between putterhead and ball as I've been known to 'nudge' the ball when addressing it - oscillated on its own spot of course :smirk:

I'll try it- alongside my new putter- and report back

This is what I used to do way back when. Wasn't very good at holing out the 6 footers but could lag the long ones to tap in distance.

Nowadays......... I can't putt! :o
Probably due to a lack of focus.
Maybe I'll try going back to this method.......couldn't hurt! :mmm:

1cm ish personally.

I played last weekend with a young lad of 16 that is a plus 1 handicap. sadly I didn't gleam too much swing info from him but the one thing I did notice was he put his irons and wedges as close to the ball as possible. I always thought I got my ones in right and tight.

after we finished our round I went and practiced the way he was pitching while also getting the blade of my wedge in as close to the ball as poss. resulted in me nipping the ball quite nicely!

This is what I used to do... now, I haven't got a clue what I do. I just set the putter up and hit the ball.

I tend to look at the back of the putter head. I'm right eye dominant and my pro told me it would help and it has. I have tried to focus on keeping still until the ball is on its way for ages and stops me peeking

Well I played a few holes and realised that I look at that gap too... I just don't focus on it.

I tried looking at a blade of grass but my feeble brain was so focused on the grass it wasn't concentrating just how firm I was supposed to be swinging the putter and I left everything short of the hole. I prefer my 'fuzzy vision' method where I'm thinking about my stroke pace rather than a blade of grass:p

Depends how many sherberts i've had the night before, it it's a skinfull i will try focus on the the first thing i see when i look down!

im not buying the idea of just staring at that red dot. the club head could be all over the shop on the way back.

it is dependant on the player having a very solid stroke. something a lot of us wont have.

I focus between the ball and the putter but closer to the ball then the putter face. Same as when I'm hitting any other shot I focus on the smallest target I can find like a branch on the tree or the top of a tower in the distance. It works more than I thought it did as when I forget and focus on the ball it can go anywhere.

Well that's me goosed. Just went up the club to try out your tip but could not find a single arrow anywhere on our practice green. :)

When i first started playing i remember reading an article on Harrington's putting and what he does etc, he mentioned this method and suggested practicing by putting a marker/5p or whatever in the gap to get you used to focusing on something small.

Personally i colour in a dimple with a marker pen and have that on top when replacing my ball and focus on that.

Well, well, well... He just won the Dunhill so I watched his putting technique pretty closely seeing as he's been on the tele all day.....

....and it appears that whilst he might stare at that 'red dot' on the backswing his head actually goes WITH the putter thru the strike.

He's not left staring at a blade of grass on the ground listening for the ball to drop, his head tracks straight after the club head as it goes thru.
