...after a round where nothing went well!?

Played this morning, driving was poor and going both ways, sclaffing irons and chipping/putting was abysmal.

Managed, somehow, to score better than i hacked it round but just wondering if anyone else has rounds like this and whst they do? I.e. work on a particular area or just accept it as one of those days?

Frustrating as been consistent recently and this came out of the blue! A new centre shafted putter may make its way into my bag for next weekend tho!

Leave it for today, but get some practice in this week focusing on a solid pre shot routine and slowing the whole action down and check all basics - alignment(feet/hips/shoulders), ball position and grip.
Sounds like your timing was right out, nothing more. However when your long game is off you need a solid short game to scramble a score, sounds like that was amiss too.

Key when your game is off is not to fight it but just accept you're off but manage your game better i.e. lay up on par 5's, play 3 wood or hybrid off tee, take extra club and swing smoother with irons etc.

It will come back.

I usually accept today was not my day then practice as normal. If it crops up on the range I will go through my swing checking the basics. If I cannot find the cause I book a lesson. This has helped me iron on some very basic mistakes. Often the pro has just asked me to swing for him and he corrects 1 tiny thing and doesn't charge me for a whole lesson.

Often it just needs another pair of eyes (or failing that a video camera)

A good recent example was my episode of the shanks. Was 31 points after 15 on sunday, shanks arrived and I NRed all the way home.

Went to the range Tue, shanks still there. Hit a bucket an the pro saw me, said I was pushing my hands out. I tried a few swishes trying to be a little steeper. Got my body in rhythm and suddenly started pureing each shot after that. Went to the course the next weekend and was +1 after 5 holes.

Either snap all your shafts or list every golf related item you own on eBay and chuck it, or accept it was a nightmare of a day, and get back in the saddle!

In years gone by I'd have got the right hump and then spent hours on the range changing things (usually the wrong things) and making myself worse.

Now I try to look at those rounds with a bit more rationality. If what you were doing was completely out of character then just put it down to one of those days and forget it, it's gonna happen.

If you feel that some of the shots that really caused you problems are something that you have been doing previously then work on fixing that.

You have to make sure you don't go changing things without good reason and when you do change things, make sure it's the right thing.

I spent years trying to correct what I thought were my faults and ended up just making more faults. As a result, I spent a lot of time and money last year having lessons trying to put the right.

I've made a promise to myself this year that I'm not going to tinker on a weekly basis. If in a couple of months I don't feel I'm improving then I'll go and get some advice from pro

I know I am capable of very good rounds and very bad rounds so if I have a howler I walk off the course , put the clubs away for a couple of days then start getting ready for the next round in the hope that it will be a better one.

Cheers for the replies chaps.

Just one of those days, didnt feel in control standing over anything. Hey ho, one nightmare too many for the putter though, see the for sale section!!

Some days standing over the ball I feel like ive never played the game before and other days I feel like I can do no wrong.

I think we would all get bored if it was easy. :)

Where did you play nwjocko. I played at Fleetwood this morning, its in pretty good nick at the moment. pm me if you fancy a game.

Had one of these friday. I try to put things right as I go round. If the card has already gone then I persevere. I know I can hit these shots I just need to get everything in sync.

Had one of those days today. Not hitting it great and hitting a big cut right which is not in my normal repetoire of errors. The short game was rank and I didn't hole many putts. The last five holes were rubbish as were the last two in yesterdays round. I don't seem to have any idea where the club is in the swing at times. Might be a timing issue but it feels like I'm going back too flat and coming over the top on the way down and spinning the hips out too fast. Putting it down to early season blues and not worrying yet (apart from the short game cold sweats I get at night)

Managed, somehow, to score better than i hacked it round
jocko, take solace in the fact it wasn't one of those rounds where you hit the ball really well but don't make a score!
;)
take a couple of deep breaths, don't panic, look forward to the next time

Snap a few clubs, have 5 pints really quickly in the bar, drive home at 100mph through town, nip down the local have 5 more pints, stick £100 pounds into a £25 jackpot fruit machine, go home and pass out.

The golf doesn't weigh too heavy on my mind after that.
