Hey guys

Please forgive me for maybe not using the right terminology.
I was at the driving range yesterday as after playing my first 9 holes I was terrible I feel sorry for the guys I played with as I think I lost more balls than holes I played.
So I have really been trying to get my drive and potential 2nd shot down. About 7 times out of 10 balls are curving off to the right. What is it that I am doing in my swing that causes this. Is this something I need to work out myself or is there a general problem that I might be doing?

Cheers

Where does the ball start and finish?

Start straight and curve right?
Start left and curve right?

And so on...

In short a slice is where the club head is open at impact and you are cutting across the ball, there are however a number of reasons you may be doing this. Get help, do not try and work it out on your own it may take you years not weeks.

If the ball starts to the right then this is mainly down to the direction your clubface is pointing. If it's curving further to the right then this is down the the club path.

So basically a slice is when the face is open at impact to the target and open to the club path. Do a search on google for "the new golf ballflight laws" there's quite a lot about it. Also have a look on youtube there are some great videos on there, Waite Mayo is one of the best IMHO.

I'm working on getting rid of my slice and thus far this is what I know can cause a slice:-

  1. OUT to IN swing path
  • Open club face at impact
  • Casting - Where your arms are out in front of you on your down swing, like you've just cast a fishing rod.
  • Spinning out - Where, instead of keeping the back of you left shoulder (For right handed golfers) towards the target you spin out.

There are others, which other forumers will no doubt mention, but go get a lesson, one where you are videoed so the explanation from the teacher has the pictures to go with the explanation.

I'd try and work it out yourself, I imagine it can't be that difficult.

I do believe that a few years ago I did see an instruction piece in one of the golf mags about how to cure a slice, but it was only very brief and have not seen anything since. Something to do with moving your hips at the same time whilst at the same time nodding your head when you start the backswing???? But it was a long time ago.

I also saw a video on you tube as well about curing slices, but it was very old, looked like something Ben Hogan did. You would have thought that someone would have have put a new video up there since and the golf mags would devote a bit more space to this problem.

My handicap leaves much to be desired admittedly, though I will say this. I used to have a horrific slice on my drives and iron shots. I had 4 or 5 lessons with a pro who took my swing apart completely, got be to start back at basics and reconstructed it.

My drives now go straight 7/10 and my iron shots go straight 8/10. The only times they don't is when I'm being lazy and falling back into old habbits, or overpowering the shot.

Go see a pro.

Sometimes if you leave your bag unattended for any length of time a family of Slice Pixie's climb in and rub themselves seductively against your clubs. If its one of the tribal leaders they might even infect your balls, which means the balls go and hide in the deep rough only to be found by other unsuspecting golfers. The poor finder believes they have found a great treasure, e.g. an almost new Pro-v, only to hit it and for it to disappear off towards another county.

Alternatively, you can always believe those above who are obviously in cahoots with the Slice Pixie's...

How do you get rid of a slice pixie infection , I think my driver at least is riddled

Take your driver, wrap it in tinfoil and leave to soak at the bottom of the nearest water hazard to the first par 4 on your course for at least 48 hours. That should solve your problem.

I find I slice real bad when I try and hit the ball, when I take a relaxed swing my path is in to out and my face closes on impact, and the ball goes 95% as far as when I swing at it hard but it's much much straighter

i had a nasty slice which was really getting on my nervous, my friend who is a pro showed me a simply grip change and now its a draw. it could be anything mate nobody on here can tell you without seeing you take a shoot what exactly your doing wrong just book a lesson

I did find the less i thought about it the better i was and then once you think you got it it goes again. I think the lesso s are the best thing i will do and i guess some you tube vids wont hurt.
The slice i seem to have is straight and then swings hard right. I very rarely had it going left at all.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
