What’s the funniest rules interpretations you have heard out on the course?

Again, I'm not talking about the courses. I'm talking about the fact you can't play them properly for half the year

not sure where you get half the year from?

We are still on the full course and will be for another few weeks unless we get heavy frost, so mid Nov to march is about 4 months hardly half the year.....

give me 8 months Links golf up here comp to 12 months sodden parkland golf for 3 times what i pay;)

Hawkeye I think it was your 'half year' comment that riled the Scottish Battalions. In Scotland from Mid Nov to Mid Feb we have enough daylight for approximately 70 golfers to enjoy 18 holes. During that period the courses are generally very quiet weekdays and busy for only a handful of hours at weekends
Spring come earlier in the north and the west coast is generally mild at that time of the year. Most courses play well from March to November so I think quarter/third of a year would have been more fitting.

Fair enough, in that case I apologise again.

Hells teeth it's Essex v Surrey now.

My money's on Surrey as I do not think there is one links or heathland course in Essex.

Haven't you heard about the world famous Romford Links? Thought to be the oldest links course in the world and where golf was actually invented. And of course there's the internationally renowned Clacton Heath course which is bidding to host the US PGA if it leaves America.

Continuing the OT portion....

I think in this case the 'thrashing' you have received by the Scots is well justified!

Having experienced both Links and Parkland golf either sides of 'the wall', I can understand the attitudes of our Northern cousins to Winter golf! Trudging round a soggy field trying to get a decent contact on a mud-splattered ball is not much fun! As I stated earlier, Links golf has a wonderful way of balancing the conditions and, warmth apart, there's no special footwear required!

Summer conditions can be a bit 'random' on links courses, but you either accept that as part of the 'fun' or play a Parkland one when the ground gets too hard. The cost of Golf in Scotland means that that's quite acceptable. I belonged to 2 courses in Scotland and the total cost was just less than 1/3rd of the cost of the (no better than either) Surrey club I joined when I returned! And that was only a proper Golf Course for 6-7 months of the year!

Thorndon Park is a pretty good 'attempt' - and a very good course in any case!

Blakes describes itself as 'Inland Links', but that's only because they failed to fund trees etc! Not a course that appeals (and a misadventure on my 1 expedition to it) apart from a couple of holes.
