What’s the funniest rules interpretations you have heard out on the course?

These Rules myth threads that crop up occasionally always make me laugh a little, but actually I wonder whether a little compilation book of all these myths followed by the correct procedure/Rule would almost serve more educational purpose than sitting someone down with a Rule book and telling them to read it cover to cover.

The worrying thing, of course, is how many comps have been lost or handicap cuts denied by the combined efforts of the Rules myth brigade...

(Note: have you noticed how it's always a more lenient/liberal interpretation when it involves themselves, but always a more draconian one when they've marched 400 yards to tell you what you're doing wrong, as in Rickg's example?)

I toatally agree Jezz. How many competitions have been won by players not knowing any of the most basic rules?

Thats a great idea, except, when some of the rules change before or after it gets published, it will be out of date, and you'll then have people using the book to prove their point instead of the rule book.....

You'd then be left with a loft full of unsold books that you end up having to give away at every opportunity...... Oh hang on! ...

You couldn't make it up!!

How about a little spot each month in the rules section of the magazine where the GM mythbusters look at often misinterpreted rules

For some reason the same thoughts went through my head. At least the book could be handy for charity day prizes.:)

I think I may have posted this on another thread some time back - but here goes:

We have an area of heather plantation which is some 30 yards short of the green and it is marked as GUR with a dropzone which has the GUR between it and the green. One of our seniors, having landed in the GUR, took his drop in the drop zone and proceeded to hit it back into the GUR 3 more times. When he finally managed to clear the GUR he claimed that the other 3 hits didn't count as he hadn't cleared the GUR with them.

you can see the logic in that thinking though........aww bless!

here's a few I can remember being pulled up for.

Most recent 'ruling' was FC called me for brushing a little sand off my putting line. Apparently Rory had been done for the same thing you know......

I raked my footprints after collecting the rake from one end of a very large bunker when my ball was at the other end....again, another FC tried to give me a 2 shot pen.

I picked my ball up out of a dry water hazard, FC said it was a pen as I didn't mark the spot i lifted it from, I asked how do you do that on the days its full of water.

Lent over the cup and putted the ball back toward me, FC had a quiet word about it being a penalty.

FC kicked his ball accidentally while searching and said was OK as he hadn't seen it and could replace for free.

Spoke to my mate this weekend who said he shot 56 for 9 holes. He explained that he had taken 10 shots on one hole because the ball was plugged due to the recent wet weather and he needed 6 hacks to dig it out.

I explained Winter Rules and he replied, "wish you had been here, would have saved me a load of shots"

Regardless of winter rules he could still have taken it unplayable and saved a lot of grief.
