Just about sums up McIlroys golfing life.

He does what many ask of him, and plays 4 solid rounds. No risks leading to car crashes. Last day he just can't buy a putt, but still beats all the other great golfers you'd expect to be fighting for the win. Yet he gets beat by one other chap, who's best position in any Major before was T75.

Fair play to Clark though, really solid, especially with Fowler struggling alongside him. Huge boost to his career.

I'm more disappointed with Fowler dropping off .. was hoping he would finally get that 1st major

As Rory said in full swing it's been so long it feels like he is hunting for his first again..

If he doesn't win the open that's a decade without one. Mental to think
Rickie has let us all down 😡, check out social media 🤭. A shame he didn't win, genuinely, but at least his game is back on track now.

Disappointing not to be able to follow the final round due to time zones but to be fair, Californians will be saying the same at The Open in a few weeks time.

Well done to Clark. Fowler winning would have been a nice story but at least we are spared all the McIlroy documentaries on Sky Sports for a least another month.

Woke up and watched the last hour

Birdies looked very hard to come by , the players all seemed to struggle getting to grips with the greens

Rory hit the ball lovely but nothing dropped , he looked very relaxed and calm , even after ,he seemed comfortable - hopefully it gives him the boost - it’s all fine margins at the end of the day and he was close

Thought Clark’s second to the 17th was very poor especially after 2 dropped shots in a row but the up and down recovery was excellent and then he played 18 very nicely

Well deserved win

Great final rounds from Fleetwood and Rahm as well - also good to see Jordan Smith with a nice finish

Disappointed for Rory. Played great golf but as has been said, nothing dropped. Beaten out by a Wyndham Clark who deserved the win, got his nose ahead and kept it there, just.

Also really felt for Ricky, to lead for so long and birdie 50% of his first 38 holes, to drop off like that is heartbreaking. Another one who just couldn't hole a putt.

Yawn 🥱
So what happened then? Oh Rory didn’t get over the line again 🤦🏻
Replies like this are much more "yawn"

Rory just isn't good enough right now, and winning Majors is tough - the expectation that he can turn up and be expected to win pretty much everytime he plays in one is asking a lot of the guy.

Watched it all and boy am I struggling now.
Rory's putter was just ice cold as was Scottie's. Some of Clarke's recovery play when out of position was superb, deserved it in the end.

Ach Rory…😟

Took myself off soon after his 3 putt from the fringe on whatever hole it was…

And disappointed that Fowler wasn’t able to keep it together.

It’s tough to win any comp, let alone a major. In the immortal words “there can be only one”. Rory didn’t play badly, he shot 271, which is the lowest 72 hole number shot by any player that didn’t win the US Open, that’s not too shabby by any standards. Unfortunately it wasn’t good enough yesterday/ this morning.

Congrats have to go to Wyndham, he had a few wobbles and managed to keep it together having never finished higher than 75 in that comp before. All credit to him, he deserved the win on the day.

Brad Faxon has been helping Rory with his putting, but the putts will not drop during the last round of Majors,
cannot have a better coach I think, a real mystery.

Of course he is good enough right now

He was one shot off winning , lowest US Open score not to win , it was a putt dropped here or a great recovery from Clarke that was the difference.

Only one person can win and he is always close - it won’t take much for him to get over the line again

Harsh. He played well enough to win the tournament, I don’t know if you watched the last round or not but he had so many putts that were within 1cm of being good, nothing would drop. He’s beat everyone you would expect him to have to beat to win but Clark played probably the best round of his life last night considering the pressure he was under.

It’s not like Rory threw this away, his game was good enough to win. Just a combination of over reading a couple of putts and 1 other guy playing inspired golf.

Rory was unlucky, Clark was just the better man on the day.
Rory would do well to carry on keeping out of the politics of golf, he seemed to be in a much better mental state and really relaxed going in to this major.
Got to feel for Fowler, but from where he was to where he is now is night and day, he would of probably of taken that at the start of the week.

Yep it seemed like shutting himself off and just concentrating on his golf put him in a more relaxed position, on the golf course he seemed very calm and even more so with the pictures and little clips off the course - joking about with other players etc

Hopefully a lot of the “politics” will disappear over the coming months and it can get back to just being about golf

And yet if Mickleson or Reed had come 2nd, I've no doubt you'd have been spreading the word that it was evidence they can still compete to win the Major's.

Your bias is actually a little entertaining at times, I give you that :)
