Titleist sell Cobra

Looks like Titleist are going to focus their energies on the better player. In the current economic climate it makes sense. There are likely to be fewer people taking up golf given the global recession as it's an expensive sport to start playing. There is also a lot of competition in the budget Market (MD, Benross) and game improver (TM,Ping, Nike bringing out clubs every five seconds). The serious golfer is likely to maintain spending levels so Acushnet could strengthen their market share on premium products. If they got a decent amount for Cobra I think they've done well.

Im a big Cobra fan & use Cobras but I liked them being attached to Titleist, not sure what Puma know about golf & will Poulter & Villegas jump ship to titleist, im going to be watching this

Puma are a well respected sporting brand, lets hope they can keep Cobra going in the right direction, I think they need a premium iron though, they have the right pro's on board with Poulter and Villegas both proven winners. If they put the right products out they could get into the very top of the game.As it stands it isn't a brand I'd look at.

Puma are a well known brand and have made some moves especially in the golfing clothes market but I'm not convinced how they will be accepted as a manufacturer although I'm guessing they'll keep the Cobra brand going. Cobra do make some decent clubs so it'll be interesting to see how it pans out. I think Titleist have clearly laid their stall out to be a better golfer brand which is where they've always tried to aim their products

For puma, read adidas. The founders were brothers that had a fall out.
Puma are a big company and will have bought with the intention of making it work.

Not sure I agree with Titleist concentrating more on the better player, the Comp driver and AP1 irons are probably 2 of the most forgiving products they've ever made.

But was that decision taken with the knowledge that they planned to sell cobra? Those developments offered options for the medium to low high handicapper but given that the average handicap is 19 they'd be crazy not to have some products that catered for that Market. The question is more about what they'll focus their energies on now.

I dont know anybody at our club who plays titleist clubs but a few have cobra. It's maybe that a lot at my club are in the improving golfer bracket and thats where they are looking to make an impact in the way TM and Ping have done. Just a thought.

Have to agree with you Tiger and don't forget about Footjoy too. Best shoes and gloves going.

Bet Greg Norman is rubbing his hands as I'm quite sure he'll receive many more millions in his bulging bank book!!!

I actually think it will benefit Cobra more than Titleist. Ever since Acushnet took them over they have been a "2nd tier brand" despite making some very nice looking clubs. I 'll probably be in the minority here and say that the Cobra S9-1 pro is a far nicer looking driver than any of the Tit D range.

I'm sure its of benefit to both companies and think Puma have gone about getting into the golf scene in the correct way.

will Poulter & Villegas jump ship to titleist,

Ogilvy already has - switched to Titleist early in the year. Maybe he saw it coming. Titleist has always been a "better player" brand and I think that's where they want to focus. Sure the AP1 is a forgiving iron but will it be replaced in a couple of years time when the AP range is due another make-over? I think maybe not.

Its not Titleist that has sold Cobra its Acushnet. They have decided to focus on Titleist. Yes, Given the parent company ownership, Titleist designs have probably been tested in part on Cobra in the past and they won't have that luxery now but their recent driver/iron releases have shown that Titleist are a brand for more than just the "better" players imo.

I can't see any current Cobra playing pro's jumping ship. Titleist will probably still have the sweetner of them playing their golf balls which will still be publicity enough. The only reason I can see players falling out with their new owners is over the clothing they wear i.e. Poulter wears his own brand and is Camillo not signed to JL? Puma might (rightly) want them wearing their gear.

As a Cobra fanboy, I'm not 100% about this deal - the good thing with being a smaller brand of Acushnet, is that prices tend to be less inflated, as they are for Titleist... If they can keep Poulter and Villegas, they should have a good platform for a big push though - given their recent, and hopefully continued, successes...

I am another Cobra fanboy, I only got my cobra irons as they were cheap and I found hitting them easy. However I now love the brand and pretty much will buy anything that Villegas wears!

There is a puma store in Meadowhall and I often look in it only to be disappointed that it doesn't have any golf stuff in it!

Ogivly went from Cobra to Tileist but he still wears Puma clothes. Maybe Puma will want him back playing Cobra clubs?

Also Rickie Fowler is clad in Puma and plays Titleist - maybe he'll need to change too? Cant see Fowler wanting to change anything, his game is right where he wants it presently.

Look at it from another perspective. You have both Titleist and Cobra sponsoring top level pro's, plus Footjoy shoeing almost everyone. A lot of sponsorship money out of one company.
IF, Cobra continues its sponsorships the money is no longer coming out of Acushnet's pockets.

I have a feeling Cobra are heading for the MD, Benross, Orka markets
