Tipping is optional for counter service.
They leave a cup on the counter and you either put something in it or you don't.
McDonald's employees are paid at least minimum wage, unlike table service restaurants.
and few are trying to make a living at it. It's mostly a kid's part time job in America.
I made a mistake comparing carrying firearms to tipping
because I was just trying to think of something else very different in American and British culture,
and that was understandably the first thing to come to mind.
Beyond that, however, I wasn't seeking nomination to be the official defender of American culture,
be it food service, firearms, or anything else.
American culture, for all of its benefits and flaws, is simply that to which I'm accustomed.
I'd love an NHS, of course, even more so before I was old enough for Medicare,
but other than that, it works for me.
Happily, UK citizens need not be subjected to the uncomfortable aspects of our culture.
You're simple always welcome to visit and endure them if you choose to.
When I visited your nation,
I understood my role as a guest,
and made a largely successful effort to not offend your citizenry.
Making that effort in no way diminished my enjoyment of the experience, I hasten to add.
We were in fact quite proud to buy poppies to wear on Decoration Day.
Lovely and respectful tradition.
