I have to admit I am a little surprised when I see trolleys and bags left unattended outside the clubhouse and pro shop (pre Covid times) and the owners are having a drink/coffee etc pre or post round. It would be so easy for someone to lift out a club and pop it in their bag. I am always wary about leaving my bag for more than a minute or two unless my PP's are there. You would hope that its safe, especially in a member's club but when visitors are around there has to be a risk.
I do think its good that this sort of incident isn't more common in this day and age given the cost of clubs.
It's funny, it's like you inherit this 'golfers trust' - same as you trust your fellow golfer not to cheat on the course, you trust him not to nick one of your clubs if you've left them outside the clubhouse. In every other walk of life I'm as cynical as they come, checking my pockets on the bus etc, but at a golf club I leave my clubs any-old-where. I don't know if you can really say that trust is still there in this day and age, especially with clubs being so expensive as you say.

This is why I advise everyone to registered the serial numbers of clubs and note them down. https://www.immobilise.com/ allows you to registered any item with a serial number onto a database. All too often when someone questionable gets arrested and the property is left in the property store because we can't identify who is the rightful owner is ridiculous. Or alternatively when we come across lost property we all too often can not find the owner either.

For the average criminal, they must find it hard to believe that folk leave items totalling a good £2k in a handy carrying case in such large numbers outside buildings for anyone just to walk off with. Not only that, but there is a ready resale market on the internet.

Any large venue is awash with unattended bags and strangers walking around... we make it too easy

Don’t forget the handy pocket on the side of the bag that is sometimes labelled ‘Valuables’ so the bad boys know which pocket to look in for wallet, car keys, etc. ?
And I am as guilty as most

And I never knew that.

Missis T said ” I thought golfers were like folk that go camping where you can leave stuff out overnight”. Back in the 70,s maybe.

Haste Hill GC, sunny Saturday afternoon about 15 years ago (might have been captain's day or similar big summer comp). White transit van pulls up, couple of blokes hop out and load up the van with all the unattended bags sitting outside the clubhouse, they were gone before anyone noticed.

We had a member thrown out from the club just 2 years ago after it was found that he had stolen clubs. In this case, his regular playing partners clubs!!!
Caught on CCTV, and was prompted to open the boot of the car where all clubs were found.

Nice guy, always in the club house chatting away with others. Who knew?

In a slightly similar vein 20 or so years ago my mate and i were golfing in the Aviemore area, having a beer in a local hotel when two guys walked in and said to the barmaid that they were taking the wall mounted tv away to be repaired, it is only when another staff member remarked that it wasn't broken that it twigged they wouldn't be seeing it again

a course near me had a spate of thefts where the thieves would buy a cheap bag of clubs off ebay and go to the course on a hot weekend, put the bag amongst the others, have a beer in the bar and then walk off with another bag.

Like others I often leave my bag unattended outside the clubhouse (which is strange since I won’t even leave them locked in the car overnight or locked up at the club for a 2-day comp) Fortunately the only thing I’ve had pilfered from my bag so far was a bottle opener but it sometimes sits out there for 2 or 3 hours!

It does make you think. How often have I been happy to leave a bag containing my wallet, keys, phone etc on the next tee while I walk off to finish a hole. Never check on it and it is just sat there next to what can be 4 complete strangers. Guess I am far too trusting.

My uncle had a set of 3 woods stolen from his bag outside the clubhouse. When he replaced them he also discarded the headcovers and bought a cheap set of pom pom ones. His reasoning was that an opportunist thief isn't going to remove a headcover to see what is underneath, he will just look for premium ones and have them instead. Kind of makes sense I guess.

Yeah I remember when the shop was broke into back in the 80’s the fellas must’ve had a right ol natter discussing which VCR’s to rob. “nah not the sanyo Trev it’s just got a 7 day timer with 4 speed rewind, grab the akia you muppet, that’s 14 days and its got long play record!

I’m pretty sure they just grab whatever they can without looking too hard at performance etc :sneaky::p

Members stealing from fellow members is a lot more common than folk think, even at some top 100 courses.
Mostly gets brushed under the carpet with a quiet resignation.
Some of the 'crooks' are also the last person on earth you would think would do it.

I played a round at Lindrick a couple of years ago. I went into the changing room to change me shoes. None of that change them in the carpark nonsense. Anyway there was a member who was not amused. Someone had taken his loafer type shoes and replaced them with the same style grubby pair. His were a pair of brand new 8’s and these were a grubby size 11. I looked around the changing room and there must of been half a dozen same style shoes left out. ?

Having suffered from a burglary myself a few years ago - not golf equipment admittedly, I can assure you (based on discussions with police) that thieves often operate to order, targeting specific items/brands etc that they have a buyer for.
Given there would be a vast range of clubs on display if left unattended, I am sure they would be selective assuming they are golfers themselves.

Interesting thread. Before I was at my local club, there was a member who got caught on CCTV stealing wallets that had been left in jackets/coats. This was whilst he was playing away somewhere in a competition for the club! He was promptly kicked out.

As for the original post... If the putter is definitely going to fetch £100+ then changing the grip would probably be worthwhile. Less than that though, and I think it may well just be a coincidence. Please update us on the outcome :)

When we are back to normal and using the bar and patio I tend to leave my bag and trolley either by the patio table or if we are inside right by the window so I can keep an eye of it. We've had clubs taken from right outside the front door where many tend to leave them. With so many new members since the first lockdown it's something I'll definitely review when it all settles down again. At least finishing on the 18th and back to the car and off means nothing can go walkies.
