The putter that changed your life....

Used without a break for near on 30yrs. I've hit a lot of putts with her. Just as well putters don't die - I'd be lost.

Pretty dainty little lady as well - heel to toe all of 4.25"

If you lost or broke it would you replace it like for like or move on?

Would take some breaking - shaft? - replace shaft. Lose it - dunno - I'd probably look to replace it with something like a Ping Anser 2 - all the modern weird fangled things don't bear looking at in my eyes never mind picking up.

Here she is - all weathered and worn

I used one like that when I played as a junior years ago. It said Acushnet Bullseye on the bottom.

I found it in my shed one day not long after I'd took the game up again so took it with me the next evening when I went up for 9 holes. I tried it on the first green and was useless with it compared to my other putter, and didn't want to carry it the rest of the way round so left it in the bin by the 2nd tee.

I have bought and borrowed loads of putters since I started to play properly in about 1983. The ones that stick in the mind are all from a long time ago and they are a Ping B60, a Wilson TPA 18 and a Ray Cook mallet that I can't remember the name of.

The Wilson is my favourite putter. I swapped it with a mate in about 1985 and it is a superb bit of kit. I also have about ten other putters in a tour bag in my study but I can't see me changing to one of them anytime soon. These include two Scottys which should suit me but don't and have led me to conclude that the Cameron brand is a little overrated and certainly overpriced.

Also on putter fitting, I have a mate who runs a business doing this and I have been fitted, as have several friends. To be honest, it hasn't made the blindest bit of difference really. My mate Guy still can't putt for toffee and my mate Chris still holes everything. Both very good players too.

On fitting putters in general, my view is you should fit them yourself by trying plenty and then buying the one you hole most putts with and like the look and feel of. That is as technical as it needs to get in my opinion. Proof being that in my golfing life as a low handicapper, particularly through the 80's and 90's, I played with and against some very, very good players, many of whom could put like Ben Crenshaw and holed everything basically. This is before the concept of putter fitting even properly existed. It is not about the club so much. Just find one you like and hone your skills.

All that said, if the putter in your hands was unimportant from a psychological perspective then I would not be still using one from my childhood! Most of putting is between the ears is the logical conclusion I would suggest and you certainly need to be comfortable mentally with the putter in your hands.

The 1 item I have never changed is my putter. Its a Ping G5i which needs a new shaft and a new grip but I do like her so, I'm contemplating spending money on a refurb, or do I just go all-in and buy a new putter.

When at Minchinhampton on Monday, there was a Scotty Cameron Newport, not sure which model but it felt beautiful and was like an extension to my body! It was £265.00 I think which seems a lot of money but it is an essential piece of our equipment. Not sure the wife would see that it that way though :(

I need a much shorter shaft and would like a fatter grip so I might still refurb but have no idea on how to go about it!

i have got my hands on a bullseye putter. ive cleaned the face so that it shines and left the rest of it grubby to act as anti-glare. going to stick a fat grip on it and take it for a spin. it has a longer shaft than my scotty so it will be nice to switch between them.

calling a putter useless is all in the head!

I didn't say the putter was useless. I said I was useless using it.

That's the chappie, but mine wasn't rounded one side that that. It could be used left or right handed.

I did feel bad chucking it, but I was carrying and had 8 holes to go!

I am a philistine!

If you want a borrow of one I have a Scotty Newport I could bring up to Kenilworth next week?
