The putter that changed your life....

Hi all,

I am interested to know if you have come across a putter that changed your game/life. I ask as I am interested in the size(length) of putter face`s at the moment and the reason I am is because the putter I am using has a face about an inch shorter than an Anser for example.

I have never used a space station so have no idea what they feel like but I am getting keep to try something different.

Did you move from a blade putter to a space station and it suddenly became easier or vice versa?

I am interested in story's where you suddenly realised that a certain putter style/size/shape worked for you.

Also are larger headed putters generally better at long range than blade style or anything like that?

Thanks for any help

Al

I am still waiting for the putter that will change my game. Although I think technique has far more to do with it. Been through Scottys, TM's, SeeMore's (closest yet), Rifes, Pings, Yes's all without great success. My latest quest involved an old Ping Anser 2. Still searching...

I've had all manor of putters, from a Taylormade "Anser Type" blade to a whopping space station all varying lengths and weights.

The putter that made the biggest impression on me is my current Scotty Del Mar.

Not so much becuase it's a Scotty, but because I was fitted for it and it fits my stroke. That is the reason I always, on putter threads, recommend getting fitted for one as it's honestly helped me.

Seemore Big FGP helped regain confidence, switched to a Scotty as was bought it as a present from the Mrs (although she did ask me first) and confidence is still there (well untill the season starts anyway).

I went from a blade to an Odyssey #7

It doesn't stop me buying putters but I always (so far) go back to the ugly stick.

Odyssey white ice 2 ball has really helped my game. I was lucky enough to be pick by golf monthly for a putter fitting at American golf in Exeter. I had a go with various makes and model but the guy fitting me said that because my swing path was straight back to straight forward something like the 2 ball would suit that stroke. i would of liked a del mar but stroke didnt suit it.im 6ft 2 and had the putter in 34'' would normally go for 35''. Love the putter and am a lot more confident on the greens. I recommend you get someone to look at your putting stroke and get a putter to suit it.

I don't think that such a putter exists. I used to constantly change putters and found myself actually getting worse so I decided to find a style I liked and stick with it no matter what.

That was about 5 years ago and the Anser iwi is still in the bag. It misbehaves every now and then but on the odd occasion when Ive tried something else I'm back to being useless at putting with no feel around the greens at all.
The Anser just feels so familiar now after 5 years,I can't see me ever changing, it's not the most fashionable of putters but it does the job.

I think the problem with constantly changing putters is with amount of materials and inserts available nowadays it's difficult to become a consistent putter because your always working with something different

My advice, Fwiw is avoid the Spaceships, find a classic style you like and stick with it no matter what.

Have been looking at both the Odyssey #7 and Two ball this morning, I guess putters that ugly but well used should be good :D

Tab, thanks, I have the same style as you so I shall give it a look. I also will get someone who knows what they are doing to have a look, I am just interested in others experiences.

Not tried an Odysey yet?

I have a 2 ball metal-x which I wasn't fitted for, but am putting the best I ever have done at the moment. However, I am also using a 2thumb grip which helps me a lot too!!

I think its v easy to get overly technical on putters. Im a big believer in feel on and around the greens rather than the technology around a putter or wedge. If it feels good and I feel confident it stays in the bag if it doesn't I sling it and find something that I can fall ion love with. ;)

It might be different on tour with the different types of grass on greens all over the world where a certain type of face and length of shaft/grip is needed but some of the best putters I know have played with the same putter for years and never change a thing.

If the Fastback is the issue (I think its the idiot on the other end personally ;) ) then feel free to have a borrow of the Kombi (then you'll have tried spaceship lol), time for me to try something else anyway :)

I am intrigued Steve, would not mind a play on the putting green but I think it maybe a little long for me? And ye, that thing is HUGE! Ye, I would like to check it out. And for sure its the idiot on the other end and you know I know that. I am just interested in different putter types for interest sake.

I have had a few putters, bit of love the look etc. But my lowest scores came with a TM Roho (that was a good looking "space station") then I had a Rossie #5. Tried a few in between but now I have this huge thing from Yes called a Madison .. Google it be sick but this thing just drains putts, easy to line up, c groove smooth roll as well. Got rid of the sticky Winn grip (don't like them at all !!) put a jumbo ionic with 2wraps of tape and just keep holing out with it. Funniest bit it cost me £60 brand new because everyone hates it. But it's like a girlfriend who thinks she is ugly ... eager to please

Mt first Bettinardi - a BB23.

Convinced me that Face Balanced was the style for me. Subsequent experimentation with loads of others confirmed!

I keep telling myself I need to be using a blade. My Anser 2 is still a work of art and has a lovely feel but my stroke seemed to prefer a mallet hence the odyssey #9. Sadly I am missing a load of short ones with the #9 at the moment. Tempted to get the Ping out again but I want work through my slump. Hoping I just need time on the green. The Anser was the one and only putter I have kept through thin and thinner and it still gets regular appearances off the subs bench. It is a classic.
