The Masters 2025

The one positive I can give LiV is that it does make the majors feel that little bit more special to see how the lads who moved over there get on

Obviously Phil’s been chatting absolute broken biscuits about Niemann being better than Scottie but hopefully he can finally turn up in a major will be keeping an eye on Rahm too desperate for him and Hovland to find some form ahead of the Ryder cup

Plus the Reed Brooks and BDC give me someone other than Cantlay to hope for abject failure out there 😂

Yes, the greens are the key to Augusta. While the no, or more recent, first cut, rough seem its defining characteristic, and inviting bombing, it is the slopes and speeds of the greens that provide the test. And more than just with the putter itself on them. They are more exacting in iron, spin, and trajectory control. Hitting it onto the correct level, from the correct side, etc are crucial. In most golf, hitting the green itself, then to what distance from the hole, tells much of the story. But at Augusta, the where on the greens in much more important than almost any other course.
Should they just have a 4 round comp on the par 3 course then? Tricked up greens on their own does not make an interesting course.

Thats missing the point. The test in Augusta, while because of the greens, is more for the shots to them, than the ones on them. Playing the right type of shot, with the right control, from the right place is the key to putting well, in terms of strokes gained or total putts, than actual skill with putter in hand. Thats why, while the greens are superficially the key problem, its really the long game skill that it tests.

I’m not sure I agree there — EDIT — not sure I agree it’s the ‘long game’ that is tested. I think that off the tee it’s a bombers course…but it’s the ultimate test of wedge and short game IMO

I have this week been watching the very recently uploaded 4th round of 2024’s Masters, and watching every shot of the leading players

I have been paying attention to what club they have in and general distances for their approach shot, and have noticed it’s mostly a 9 iron or wedge in, on a heck of a lot of Par 4s…..bomb the driver 325 yards and then a 160 Wedge in or 9 iron….

IMO it’s the wedge game (having smashed a driver a mile) that is the key to success at Augusta - hitting the right shelf on the greens etc

Perhaps that’s why Rory has always done quite well enough to be close to the mix but never well enough….he clearly is the preeminent bomber over the last 15 years, but he’s not not out-and-out elite with his wedge control

Who's your tip then? 🤔

I think with certain exceptions The Masters is normally won by someone that has played the event a few times and learned by their previous mistakes and so works out where the misses are, especially around the greens, and who then have a good short game/putting week

The masters is normally won by someone who has a good all round game:
- need to be a bomber off the tee, Harmon won’t ever win here.
- need to be very precise with irons to access tight pin positions.
- need a great short game to recover because everyone misses a few greens and puts themselves in tricky situations. Escaping with a par or bogey is so key for momentum and we see a lot of double bogeys during the week.
- need a hot putter, especially distance control on longer putts.

Ludwig has as good a chance as most 🤷

He’s an absolute bomber off the tee and was excellent in his debut year there, last year. He *should only get better the more times he plays it, with the more knowledge he accumulates of the greens

Tommy lad has the game.
His time has come.
The God fearing south will be welcoming their fairway Jesus striding through the Dogwoods and Azeleas.
I’d love it if it happened, but Scottie’s rock solid 62 today must have crushed a little bit of hope out of every single other entrant - they would all have been hoping he was still a little bit off form …

So......apart from that, it's easy. LOL
