The Masters 2025

Speith, willett, reed, Matsuyama, an old tiger. All won it since wory last won a major. Are any of them really bombers? Is scheffler even a bomber?
Obviously they all probably hit it longer than anyone on here but compared to the average tour pro?

To win the Masters requires a lot of things to go right across the 4 days

It will also depend on the weather conditions

Wedge and short game needs to be sharp

Also need a touch of fortune

All those won it when it a bit of form apart from Willet who managed to take advantage of a hot 18 and Speith having a mare

Thats missing the point. The test in Augusta, while because of the greens, is more for the shots to them, than the ones on them. Playing the right type of shot, with the right control, from the right place is the key to putting well, in terms of strokes gained or total putts, than actual skill with putter in hand. Thats why, while the greens are superficially the key problem, its really the long game skill that it tests.

Absolutely spot on.

I remember reading an interview with Gary Wolstenholme when he qualified for his second Masters after he won the Amateur Championship. Whilst he was laser accurate in his prime, he was short off the tee.

Whilst I suspect he never expected to be in with a sniff of winning at Augusta, he went as far as to say he could never compete there anyway, as he was hitting long irons into impossible greens whilst everyone else was hitting mid or short irons.

It’s not just about what happens on the greens there - it’s getting in the right positions on them to begin with.

Scotty is above tour average clubhead speed. Depends what you define as a bomber.

Well the guys mentioned are only 10 to 15 yds down on the bombers and (particularly in the case of scotty) that’s to the centre of the fairway which is why he’s right up there as one of the best in strokes gained off tee. Spieth was pretty strong on those stats too in his 2015 peak although just based on TV highlights I’m guessing he’s more on the erratic side now 😆.

I thought Spieth was winning it based on his putting?
And the knowledge of the rule book, of course.

Willett didn't have form??

…and in advance of the Masters, this week it’s the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Lottie Woad of my parish is the current holder. It’s been lovely this last year with her being the holder and wouldn’t it be lovely if…yeh it would - but we all know that that is unlikely…probably very unlikely. But at the club we are all wishing her well.

I apologise, the comment was in bad taste. I just have absolutely zero interest in her and no idea what she's got to do with the masters.
I came on to delete it but it has already been removed. I will learn my lesson

It’s a ladies amateur event

Surely the purpose is to have amateur ladies competing for a title at Augusta
There must be something deeper than lets run a tournament.
A bit of woke flagging ? Mens version doesnt seem to attract the same interest. Or if they were really committed, they would hold a ladies Masters which would automatically give women a true third major.
