I'm not saying replace him FOR £80m. If the replacement is £120m then that means only "spending" £40m rather than taking the full £120m hit when they inevitably have to replace him if/when he leaves for free.

If they were guaranteed (or even remotely in with a sniff) of CL football and some sort of meaningful income then, yeah I get it.

Absolutely he is a generational footballer and I don't think anyone is saying that he can/will be replaced like-for-like, I don't actually think any player can be like-for-like as they all have differing abilities and personalities. But they WILL have to replace him at some point. The conundrum is whether to generate income or not whilst he still has "value".

I understand your point, taking £80m now looks good on the balance sheet but will it have a detrimemtal affect on the team this season?

Or is Levy and Co hoping Kane and Spurs have a great start to the season and he signs a new contract?

The latter is a risk worth taking imo, lesser of the 2 evils.

Likewise, I understand your point however this bold section is absolute short-termism. What about the effect next season?

Kane has said he wants to win trophies, he's now 30, I think his love and loyalty to Spurs ends there and a good start to the season won't ameliorate that.

Sadly the price thing was always going to happen once money took over the game. It is now a financial arms raise and those with the money are quite happy to drive up the prices becuase that immedaitely means that most of the competition cannot afford the best players. The top clubs in Europe will only be happy when they are the only ones who can afford the best players whilst they leave it to the other clubs to develop them for later purchase.

Wait until the other Arab nations look to try and keep up with the Saudi league and suddenly you will have unlimited spending powe across a few leagues all eying up the best talent in the European leagues.

They'll have 12 months to sort that, as opposed to 3 weeks if they sell now as it stands.

The new Everton ground is coming along nicely View attachment 48870
Haha.

Fortunately for them the stadium is looking magnificent rising from an old dock. Probably because the current board have nothing to do with the day to day management of the build, unlike the club.

I mostly think it's crazy that we're five days from our first game and we still haven't signed a centre back. This Dutch feller is supposedly nearly done, but we needed at least two ideally, and we're cutting it very fine indeed. Several who were supposedly leaving haven't actually gone yet either... Lloris, Perisic, Hojbjerg (not that I want Hoj to go)... lots of dead wood that came back from loans that are still there also like Reguilon, Rodon. The squad is in a very unfinished state considering how close we are to the season starting.
Ok, we have signed him now. I've never heard of him but seems like he might finally be our Vertonghen replacement. Fingers crossed.

Have to admit I am surprised Newcastle aren't going all out for kane

Champs league football

Lot of the top teams can't afford him

City don't need him

Guaranteed goals

Match made in heaven

Maybe Kane doesn't want to go to Newcastle? They may be able to afford his wages, but still don't exactly guarantee him trophies as much as other clubs nor are they considered a massive global club (yet).

On a positive me tickets for the super cup final in Athens turned up today.
The Grecians are in for a pleasant surprise seeing Tash in his crocs and speedos.

Bayern guarantees him at least a title a season. They waver once every decade to win the league, and they just did that and still won it. To be fair, they could play anyone of us up front and still win. They need (someone like) Kane to go the next step, and Mane wasn't it. They wanted Harland but can't compete with City.

The C solution for Bayern is Fullkrug, new German national striker, Bundesliga top scorer, but also already 30 and only had 1 good 2nd division and half a great 1st division season so far.
I hope he stays in Bremen and adds to this, he is great for us, but surly not CL proven.

Aren't they slightly hog-tied by FFP at the moment?
Hog-tied.

UEFA: You broke the rules!

Newcastle: Ok.

UEFA: You can't do that.

Newcastle: Ok.

UEFA: We're gonna punish you!

Newcastle: Ok.

UEFA: Here's a fine for.... 500k.

Newcastle: Ok. We done?

Newcastle pays fine

UEFA External: We're committed to financial fair play, and the fine imposed on Newcastle is clearly showing that to the rest of the football community. We will invest this money back into grass roots football and an extensive 100 year plan to achieve diversity and inclusion throughout the organisation.

UEFA Internal: So, boys - You know that newly opened strip club down town? Pack things up, we're going for representation.

I don't really see why Kane would be that enamoured with a move to Bayern. Yes he'll win 3 Bundesligas or whatever, but that's winning trophies on easy mode. He won't be remembered for that. But if he stays in England and becomes the new record goalscorer, he absolutely will be remembered for a long, long time.

Maybe he just fancies living and working somewhere a bit different and interesting?
It's his life, I'm not sure why he should stay in n17, when a whole continent is available, just to please other people.
Obviously, nothing I've heard about him suggests natural inquisitiveness, but most people benefit from a bit of variety in their habits.

He has three children aged 2 to 6 and his wife is pregnant with a fourth. Not impossible but would be quite an upheaval to move them all to Germany right now I think.

Newcastle are not hog tied by FFP at the moment but things are tight and need managing correctly (I play golf with a bloke who works within the Premier League....he doesn't tell me much of significant secrecy or specifics but it sometimes makes you shake your head when you hear accounts of club X ringing up about club Y and shouting "not fair"...and then the next day club Y rings up about club Z shouting "not fair"....its apparently like a playground full of kids).

Much as I'd be happy to see Kane join Newcastle, blowing all/most of the budget on Kane would have been irresponsible in light of the bigger picture and the long term sustained growth that the club are trying to achieve. Would be like me getting a pay rise and blowing it on a Ferrari and then having to sell it after a couple of months. Plus Levy would no doubt add a 10% "direct competitor tax" to the fee on top of the "Saudi Oil Money tax" that clubs seem to add when Newcastle are in for a player.
