I've seen the clips of the alledged incident, there's no evidence Robertson actually touches the assistant.

What nobody has mentioned is Robertson is walking back towards the tunnel and the Linesman is walking accross the pitch towards the referee in the opposite way.

He hasn't gone chasing after the linesman. Referees and linesman are not unapproachable.

Fair enough. The only one I'd seen was the video from the dugout where it looked that way. Whatever the angle, I have no issues with the way the linesman removed Robertson's hand from his arm. Looked like reasonable force to me, which I think should be encouraged if somebody lays hands on you uninvited.

Reasonable force? You jerk your elbow up to chin height is reasonable force? And you’d encourage that level of response?

Oh c’mon, now you’re just trying to cover your a$$ after making a silly statement. If someone lays a hand on you, you jerk away from that contact, not up into it. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
 
Anyone else watching the National League title decider? Tuned in at half time and seems a proper game this, standards way above what you would expect for non-league, which sums up both sides this season clearly, expect whoever goes up will be favs or close to in div 2 next season. All to play for last half hour

Reasonable force ?! Really - imagine it was the other way around and the linesman touched a player on the arm , do you think it would be reasonable for the player to flinch the elbow like that and connect ? Do you think the player would be red carded ?


I agree that players shouldn’t be confronting officials and Robbo should get a card if he has screamed and shouted at the linesman but the videos don’t appear to show that at all

Nope. If you're trying to break contact you should move your arm in whichever direction you can get most force. It might even be straight back towards them, but upwards is usually best because you can apply more force yourself that way.
But now we're getting as silly as the scenario that has actually caused this pointless conversation.

was 0-0 when i started watching, 2-2 now with 15 mins to go. will hollywood get the ending it wants?

At the risk of being controversial here, in the event this linesman has ever spent any time doing martial arts or any sort of self defence, one of the techniques commonly taught to free yourself of someone’s grip is a sharp upwards movement. It’s something I have certainly been coached in during my previous life. Maybe, just maybe, his reaction was instinctive.

It’ll all come out in the wash.

Not that that would justify, but it might help explain the situation. Suppose this is what the investigation with look to uncover.

Referees and linesmen get all sorts of abuse and aggressive remonstrations from players very regularly. In any other walk of life that would not be permissible in the workplace. But because it’s on a football pitch it’s ok? In this situation it appears to be Robertson approaching and saying something. The linesman’s action is certainly an overreaction. Physical violence should not happen. I think the linesman will get a ban - but equally if it comes out that Robertson goaded/was aggressive etc he should get a ban too.

I think the issue of respect for the officials is a horse that’s now 3 fields away. I’d love the attitude seen in rugby reflected in football, although I see it’s even eroding there.

A rule I’d like to see implemented is only the captain can approach the referee. Anything beyond that and it’s an automatic yellow card. After all, it is the officials place of work - there is a duty of care…
 
Looks to me - from the 2nd of the angles LiverpoolPhil posted - that the player leaned into the official with arms deliberately by his side! I've no idea what words, if any, the player spoke, but that's likely to be relevant too! Fending off? Over-reaction? I'll be neutral and wait for the result of the inevitable inquiry, though to me, lineo reacted whereas player specifically walked in wrong direction in order to confront, so a worse, if more common, offence! A pair of bans (well ban and dropping) would not surprise me.
 
Did anybody see the clip of the Blackburn player assaulting the ball boy at Huddersfield today - not sure if he could be cautioned for it - he wasn't.
If he'd done it to a player, it's a straight red.
