View attachment 56636More praise for Forest:

For the last 10-15 years (at least) Football has all been about possession and patience, keeper plays it out to a defender, defenders look for a pass, full backs/wing backs probe forward, nothing on, pass it back, across the back, probe the wing, etc etc.

This has filtered down to kids football and how they are being taught to play, not saying it’s a bad thing, but you need the players with vision to break the defence down or the skill to make that run/pass.

Well imo, Nuno has took that playbook and ripped it up, he’s not got Forest playing this way by accident, he’s got the right players in the right positions, they know their responsibilities, he’s instilled a work ethic 2nd to none and got a squad willing to put in the hardwork.

As much as Murillo and Sels will rightly get a lot of credit for games like last night, all those Forest players involved on the pitch deserve credit for not only their effort when they have the ball, but their effort when they haven’t. I’d love to see Chris Wood’s stats for last night,

It may need a bit of luck at times giving opposition teams so much possession and possibly chances, but for me it’s great to see.

Possession stats are before last nights game:

There have always been teams that are less possession based and more about being solid and countering and have found varying levels of success

We can all remember the Bolton and Stokes of the past

The Burnley’s etc

They played to the strengthens of the squad and to the players that they could bring into the club

It does a job

It will get the team points

But in the long run it’s not going to give a team any sustained success

The way Forest play wasn’t too different to the Wolves side he had , and it’s the same as he tried to play at Spurs

And he will keep Forest a solid team in the same way he did with Wolves

It’s not going to win trophies though

You might want to hold on to that thought. Year after year, I'd agree, I think eventually teams will counteract them. This season, possibly next, no reason why not.
Read that Leicester were 18th in the league in terms of pssession, when they won the league, and had the lowest pass success rate.

Generally, you'd expect the better sides to keep possession more than their opponents of course. Furthermore, we've witnessed a number of years of Man City domination, where Pep goes into overdrive in terms of dominating possession. I think many have decided that is the only way to play football, with even the weaker teams trying to mimic it as best as they can (often with disastrous consequences).

Forest are probably reminding us that there are many ways to be a good football side and win lots of matches. And not every single way requires you to have most possession.

Were did I say they’ll win trophies and are you really comparing this current Forest team against the likes of Bolton, Stoke and Burnley😂😂😂

Southampton have used 31 players 😳. They either have severe injury issues or the manager didn't know his best team. Helps explain part of their problems.
And Man City have used the fewest. With all their injuries, and general talk over the last number of years of them having a really excellent and deep squad, I was surprised to see that.

From memory, could be wrong, I think of Pep rotating quite often. This suggests not this year. Perhaps helps answer why they look a bit leggy this year? I know forest haven't used many players but they don't have as many games to play.

Possession is up there with Grealish being most fouled as the most useless stat in football. When you look at how many passes some teams have from a goal kick before it gets anywhere near the halfway line, no wonder it looks like they have lots of possession.

It may give them a chance of a cup potentially

Maybe the statement would be more along the lines of sustained success

Not comparing them to anyone

Just highlighting that in the past there have been many teams that have had a more pragmatic style that’s not based around possession and have done well

There are many different ways for a team to play to look to get results in games

Even Arsenal right now are being a bit more like Wimbledon with the set piece threat

Pep Guardiola has got the entire world believing that the only way to win (or to deserve to win) a football match is to dominate possession, play out from the back and tippy-tap it around your back line until you bore the opposition to death. How’s that working out for Southampton this year? How did it work out for Burnley last year? (Alright, it somehow worked out for Kompany - I’ll never understand that!)

King Nuno has proved him wrong and people are struggling a great deal to accept it.

Give me this current style of play by Forest - breaking away at lightening speed and scoring beautiful goals - rather than playing five million passes round the edge of the box before tying to walk it into the net any day!

Any decent manager will look at the players they have and then employ the tactics required to get the best out of the players he has and get results

That’s exactly what Nuno has done- adjusting to play to the strengths of his players

The strengths are the back line and pace on the break

Kompany etc were stuck in their ways to play just one way and didn’t have the players to play the way they wanted , same with Soton

City have the players to do it to a high level which is why they are successful

Pep couldn’t do it with the level of players at Burnley etc

It’s also an issue Amorin is facing - he has a preferred system and he is sticking to it even if he doesn’t have the players to play it ,

It’s why the club prob went with Slot - his tatics aren’t too different from Klopp and the players are suited to it and it’s working
