New tranche of tickets on sale this morning for United’s Europa League fixtures. The only one I am available for because of other commitments is the home leg against Rangers.

Joined the queue, waited patiently and by the time it was my turn the cheapest tickets available were £499 a pop.

No thanks.

Were you not accidentally in the queue for Oasis tickets?

£499 for 1 ticket? Is that the going rate for football tickets these days?

Fortunately not. I’ve a few games coming up which have cost me around £45 to £60, depending on seat.

The game against Rangers is clearly heavily subscribed. Add to that the fact I really want two seats together and the options are limited. If I was after a single seat I could probably find one.

Sadly, for the last decade at least getting tickets for United home games has become increasingly difficult. Twenty years ago everything went to ballot, so unless it was a big game I could invariably get a ticket. The applications opened six weeks before the games and the ballot was then drawn a fortnight or so before match day.

Now, it’s open season for members the day the fixtures are announced in June. The bulk of tickets go on sale that day, and are snapped up by people in the knowledge that they can return them at a later date if they can’t make it. Further small ticket tranches are then released periodically.

All the league fixtures are sell outs on the ticketing platform within hours.

I've been to Old Trafford for Rugby games and i struggle to think of an area for a seat that would justify £499 to sit in? I wonder if football is following the dynamic pricing strategy the US use.
I am not sure why it would attract such a price when United are playing with all due respect to the Scottish contingent on here, what should be a lesser side. It's not exactly one of the European top sides coming to Old Trafford. Maybe they are tapping into that anglo Scottish rivalry

Having looked at it again, the price was right at £499, but it is a partial hospitality package. It includes a meal in one of the cafes. But it’s some way short of full hospitality.

One of my very early games there was a league game against Charlton and my wife purchased that as a very similar package - a pre match meal and tickets. Even given inflation it would have come in way, way cheaper than what they charge these days. And the hospitality is nothing special. Certainly not worth the £450-odd that it costs over and above a seat in the North Stand.

So a rip off however you look at it.
