The all things EV chat thread

Been doing a lot of cycling lately and have noticed how noisy EVs are at speed.

I go down a cycle lane on a duel carriageway and the noise from EVs is worse than other cars at 60mph.
Is it the weight or harder tyres ?

There very quiet at low speed though and creep up on you.

I can tell it’s EV by the green on the plate.
Most EV's are originally spec'ed with XL tyres. If you don't replace them XL tyres you risk an insurance claim potentially being refused on the grounds of not up to spec.
Just in case you think it wont't happen, it has already.

The noise from the tyres are related to the low rolling resistance construction.. xl is common a standard (sl) is an old specification.. new coming is HL which is even higher load.

But on another note we did a holiday week down in Exeter and it was absolutely painless with the charging !

Following on from my first bill where I was paid more export than usage this billing period has started with a nice 50% off charging and battery tonight. So I'm using as much battery as I can now to maximise the energy at 3.5p a unit.. excellent weather tomorrow so will turn a tidy profit

Wasn't going to charge but might aswell to unlock half price

Painless drive to France for the Disney trip

Leshuttle was lovely

Left home 100% got to the hotel (110 miles roughly) 47%

Driving at 80mph in France as to keep to their limits

Recharging the car next to our hotel. Dirt cheap 24p a kWh .. it's already at 84% whilst the kids use the soft play after dinner .. costing under €10 (charging off My octopus account aswell) to charge. Bargain .. Disney has free to use so this will be our only charge until we use this hotel again on the way back as it's a nice break in the drive for the kids

Driving in France is easy. We hit it here on Friday rush hour and it was basically no congestion and no one was hugging the fast lane in 200 miles.

Le shuttle was great as well, on checking we could chose to go at the booked time or right now, so we just drove straight up and in.

Obviously, still have 1/4 tank of petrol at this point ;-)

Not many EVs in France, saw 3 so far in 3 days.

We had the flex plus so we stopped for a quick wee and snack in the lounge then got on the next train

We're booked on 1436 train but got the 1336

Have seen a few EVs but all from England ATM

Really set up well here tho

And my octopus card worked first time

France is serious about climate tho. McDonald's has reusable boxes for their food so cut right down on waste

I once arrived in LeMans during rush hour just as bad as any UK city at the same time.

Another solid run from the hotel to Disneyland

235 km think it was. Arrived with 29% charge. Free to use chargers at the hotel. 11kwh speed

Car will be full by end of our first day exploring

Didn’t you drive through to the Disney hotel from home? I know you have 3 little ones, but an overnight stop in-between seemed excessive.
“It’s a small world after all”

Enjoy the park, don’t forget to queue to meet all the characters.

They wouldn't have latest the drive. We stopped 50 mins after le shuttle and was perfect

Had a hotel with a McDonald's nearby that had a soft play and car chargers. Perfect

Also meant we got more time at the actual park, we were doing 4 days total but made it 6 with a stop each way. 11am in Disney , can leave whenever Thursday and not worry about a long drive just a nice break overnight to recharge ourselves and means don't have to stop for the car as we can charge it there

Everyone's a winner

Plus adds to the adventure

Nail on head. Modern cars are far too big. We manage fine with a Fiesta and a Citigo.
In fairness Ken, not criticising, there's a few reasons why folk have 'bigger' cars, i had a V40 which was quite small and perfectly nice but at 6 foot 2 it was just too small for me, couldn't drive it for any longer than half an hour without having to stop and get out to stretch my legs, was in absolute agony, now got an xc40, which you might consider too big but it's perfect for me, sitting more upright is much more comfortable, I can drive for about 2 hours now before I have to stop and stretch 😀

Thinking of a drive around Scotland in the summer. We can get to Edinburgh from the south with couple of overnights and charging.

A friend who lives in the sticks in the highlands says that they don’t have any charging around them

We r initially thinking Edinburgh - Fort Williams - Inverness - Carlisle over 2-4 days. Question is .. is it reliable to do with an non-Tesla EV

Would plan it in a heartbeat in a non-EV

Yeah people forget average height has gone up and as always kids safety standards have "improved" so they have to have ridiculous size seats etc for longer so cars are bigger to fit stuff in

We had to have an Alhambra for 4 years until eldest could have just a booster and then could downsize slightly but even still couldn't fit in a fiesta 🤣

Yes, but not all cars routinely carry families. Most cars spend most of the time with only 1 or 2 occupants. So there's no need for ALL cars to have got so big.

In any case, even if they have to be a bit longer to cope with increased height, why do they have to be so wide? (Is it because we're all much fatter as well as taller? 😅). They don't fit in parking bays and make driving on narrow country lanes more challenging.

Width is the most important part. Try fitting seats without it. Google width of children seats, wider than the average adult

Standard Britain not updating our infrastructure around things IE car parks.

Meanwhile In Disney Paris , just one of the hotels .. that's just 2 of the rows.. all free to charge and wide

Constant upgrading of facilities not running things into the ground and then going hmm it's broken now
