Don't think thats controversial, it's very sensible tbh

Ironically the Germans "posher" brands (Audi, Merc, BMW) have made more of a hash than the "lesser" brands (VW, Skoda)

They just can't seem to commit to releasing a decent EV, the cost of the mercs are insane, BMW have just slapped electric motors in their best selling ICE models, Audi I'd argue have done a slightly better job. Especially since they're bringing out an EV RS6 next year.

I like the look of the BYD seal, there's one just down the road from me, however it has the same issue that a lot of the cheaper high power EV cars have which is a low top speed limiter and a huge acceleration drop off past about 60mph (not a huge issue in the UK of course).

I'll definitely shop around, to be honest even the day time rate is way cheaper than public charging. The BMW won't be too bad because we can get over half a charge on it in 5 hours but the Porsche has a way bigger battery so will probably need some day charging too when we have both. The BG day rate was a bit better than the Octopus one last I checked. A pity we won't be able to get on the smart one because I think I saw that gives you 6 hours per night instead of 5, would have been useful....

If you are shopping around OVO is good but they do limit what chargers you can have. To get the cheap rate you let them take control of the charger (can be overridden to manual) and they charge whenever the demand is low on the grid not just at night.

His podpoint won't work with OVO unfortunately

Just had a look at their tariff, looks a lot better than the British Gas one (which was slightly better than Octopus go).
Prompted me to look - back in Feb I fancied the EON one, but BGas definitely was cheaper then (for me) due to peak & daily charges being lower.

This is BGas (for me) now
Off Peak 7.90p per kWh
Peak 24.05p per kWh
Standing charge 62.13p per day

EON (for me)
(07:00 - 00:00) 24.57p per kWh
Off-peak (00:00 - 07:00) 6.7p per kWh
Daily standing charge: 64.28p

So very little in it now.
With the peak save thingy BGas do, I'll stick for now.

It does seem quite changeable, perhaps competition helping. Am now on my 3rd tarrif since Feb! Will check in on EON again in the spring - tend to charge more when the days are longer.

That's the exact same BG tariff that I'm on

Very impressed with my dad's install today by octopus

Ohme charger with 8 m cable

Now his supply comes in under the stairs which you can drill straight into the garage. So to save the box getting in the way of the garage door the guys installed it in the garage and then the cable can be run under the garage door ( which they have been doing anyways with my 3 pin) and when not in use Tidies Away very nicely

He could always change chargers and sell the old one.

Very true, I would personally recommend changing to an ohme as you will open up a world of smart charging

However you need to weigh up the cost

I found when looking into a new charger it was £950 regardless as they wanted to run their own cables

I got lucky found one on eBay brand new and a friend fitted it and he kept my old one as cost so cost me £550

If it's £950 you won't make that back for a while when eon drive is 6.9p a kWh for 7 hours a night so might aswell stay

Going to Warwick castle this week so it's 260 miles (car does 240) so one charge will do us. Kids need wees and feeding on both journeys so I took literally 10 mins to pick out service stations each direction (covering both the M40 and M1 routes) how long roughly it takes to get to them, how many miles and how many chargers are there.

Sent to the wife so she can decide on our travels which one we need to stop at and I know chargers are all covered. Unless she picks Oxford. Only 2 chargers there but on the off chance we can't get a charge we either plan a second stop or on the way home top up.

Either way all covered with minimal effort

Edit the wife and I have discussed and (depending on traffic) the M1 is better going out with M40 coming back because 1 hour 30 mins is a nice time for the kids so aim for the most chargers within that. Job done 👍

One of our swindle groups brother has a Merc EV. Its been playing up for a little while. Merc dealer has decided the battery pack needs replacing, but it's failure is due to his charging of it and the warranty doesn't cover it. They only want 10k.
The car is on a PCP and after 18months is now costing him £650 a month to sit and do nothing.
He is handing it back to the lease company as soon as he can.
