I'm just trying to point out that in having an EV there really are a lot of problems one has to overcome that are not always made clear.
Mudball is certainly finding things out that I had no idea about.
It's just not as simple as plugging the car in and getting a battery charged up.
I'm actually finding this thread very educational.

We need chargers and cars to adopt Tesla's method.

Card linked to car itself

Turn up, plug in. Charge starts then card is charged for payment

What an absolute performance ................................ you're not selling it to me.
Do you think no one has ever had any problems putting fuel in their car before EVs came along?

I’ve seen people put the wrong fuel in, struggle to get the hose to the car. Not much difference between that and Mudballs story.

If my wife had told me the story above, I would seriously question her competence to drive.

At least you can't put the wrong kind of fuel in an EV, positive step 🤣

A lot of EV issues are user error. It's amazing how as a human race we can put man on the moon but start a car charge is challenging

User error is the absolute bane of my life at the moment, so it doesn’t surprise me that people struggle with the simple task of charging their car. Or putting the correct fuel in.

Like everything in life tho isn't it. Things are so simple until humans get involved and don't follow simple instructions

Mrs used our Electroverse card… very straightforward once she found a working charger. Apparently folks turned up and were disappointed that none of them worked.

I need to see how the electoverse billing works.

On the Tesla bit, it is a closed ecosystem that they control. So easier to implement. Electoverse allows plug and charge - so no app or card needed. But this only works with IONIty charges (https://electroverse.octopus.energy/community/ev-blogs-and-guides/what-is-plug-and-charge)

BTW has anyone tried to charge a non-Tesla with a Tesla supercharger in the U.K.?

Not sure if all cars work plug and play with it but it's a step

Electroverse you can have come from your octopus balance

Because maybe it's not that simple?

Considering people can't follow a very simple green pump for petrol and a black pump for diesel system , so much so they had to make diesel pumps fatter so they can't fit in petrol tanks and then made diesels in newer ones not accept petrol pumps .. then it's safe to say people are morons.

Oh, of that there is absolutely no doubt, no doubt whatsoever!

There are plenty of similar videos online

I wonder how many have put petrol into a diesel vehicle or vice versa.

The fact that misfueling is covered on some insurance policies and there are specialist companies to sort it out must be really common

Always amazes me when people do it. We at one time had one petrol and one diesel car .. never came close to picking up the wrong pump.

I would have thought a huge number of people have done that, but that's nothing to do with how complicated it is, it's just a case of absent mindedness.
Fuelling an ICE car really is very straight forward ........................................ and quick. ;)

With Octopus now controlling the charging rather than me within the set window, I can see that they also charge outside the window

Tonight the charging map starts at 11 instead of the regular 11:30 and it will be at the same price of 7p

Manually charge your battery at 11 for extra juice

I'm having my charger replaced Thursday and same time wiring it up outside the battery so that whenever they want to charge it they won't take from my battery

Why? That would be at the higher rate of 28p... instead i can just use the 11:30-5:30 for ABC for 8p.
When octopus sets up the smart charge before 11:30, it will charge at 8p. Way too many algorithms for me to get involved. I now have a set of working charging mechanism... plug it in at any point and Octopus does the rest overnight. Wake up to a 80% charged car.

No. Your whole house is 7.5p during the extra slots

So today we did about 260miles round trip in the EV. I had charged it up to 100% overnight.... It did the first 130 burning thru 75% of the battery. So on the return trip, stopped at a fast charger with evyve using the Electroverse card. Charged 53Kwh in about 50 mins. It was at a farm, so stayed for lunch while the car charged. Overall good experience (barring the nonsense around one of the guns not working). Charging cost £40.

In contrast I have done a return trip to B'ham in about £40 and had some fuel left. So pound for pound, using public charger is not cheaper than using ICE car.
The other bit is that there is no way to know if the price was competitive i..e could i have gone down to a BP charger 5 miles away and charged for £25. Equally, does my BMW card give me a better deal than my Electroverse card (I have previously charged using the BMW card for about £20).

Just a brief response to the thread's original title: "would you buy an electric car".
As many here will know, my view is that an EV isn't right for our needs just yet.
Today we ordered a new (well, 1 year old) car for my wife: a Hyundai i30 estate.
Turns out it's a "mild hybrid", so we've partially joined the revolution 😁
I was a little surprised to discover that the hybrid battery is a whopping 0.44kWh(!)
Reckon that might get us to the end of the drive 😆
