What are the odds that fire at Luton Airport was caused by a tesla spontaneously combusting?
Pretty slim as Tesla don't make hybrids.

''Hybrids reflected the most at 3,475 fires per 100,000 vehicles. This is most likely because hybrids utilize two powertrains. ICE vehicles caught fire substantially less often, at 1,530 incidents per 100,000 vehicles. EV fires were significantly lower than the others, with 25 fires per 100,000 vehicles.''

Those are interesting stats. Add together the number fires due to ICE and EV problems and you get 1555 per 100,000. What is it about having both systems in a car that makes a fire more than twice as likely? Something weird is going on, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was related to "lies, damn lies, and statistics".

Whatever caused it, what an insurance claim that will be o_O . You also have to feel for the people stranded, last night and when they return, when they can not reclaim their cars. Not nice.

So if you add them up it's about 5,000 in 100,000 or 1 in 20. That seems massively high, I've seen the occasional evidence of a car fire in places but 1 car in every 20 just seems incredible.

Only if the 100,000 cars are a combination of Hybrid, ICE and EV. If it's 3,475 Hybrid fires per 100,000 Hybrid vehicles, etc etc, then it becomes 5,030 fires per 300,000 cars....which still seems quite high yo me.

Are these numbers real? Hybrids are out a while now, and 3.5% of them caught fire?
Not that the Toyota Prius doesn't deserve it, but that number seems excessive.

At some point post 2030 I will have to if I want to buy a new car. But not at the moment as I don‘t need a new car and I expect my VW Golf and VW Polo - both relatively new - to carry on fine for plenty of years yet. When the time comes, and if we are still living where we do, charging won’t be too much of an issue as there is a two vehicle charging station on the main road right at the bottom of our road.

(aside) the charging station has caused parking issues on our road as it takes up space for four cars and the cars that used to park there now park on our road.🙄😡

This raises an interesting point for me. Is there anything to prevent someone parking an ICE car in the bays at the charging station? I'm assuming that there aren't double yellow lines as that would mean no one could park there. And if someone did park there is there anything that could be done? Would they get fined and if so what rule would they be breaking?

Pretty toothless tbh. People don't care. It's the same with everything tho. All things work until people are involved

Think I've said this before but bike stands need my local station the council put a foot pump there for everyone to use .. brilliant

Some selfish twit cut it off just for the sake of it

People are the main problem in the world. For all the good things you can you can't plan for people to be selfish

I don’t think so…other than a time limit of four hours (or it might be two - off top of head I’m not sure) - and that rather scuppers residents parking.

But this was obviously a software issue. Since a modern EV is basically a computer, moving the drive selector to "neutral" is just an input request which it may very well ignore. Gone are the days when the controls on a car are mechanically connected to the drivetrain. Scares the willies out of me.

Incidentally, my daughter has a ZS EV, and is a bit concerned.
Imagine how a driverless car would react in this situation.
It might not even recognise that there is a problem.
very scary.!

Sound to me like the guy had his foot on the wrong pedal!

There have been similar reports in the past of possessed cars when someone has crashed. I’d wager 99.9% are people hitting the wrong pedal.

Push the break pedal hard and it should counter the car accelerating all by itself.
