Tell the truth about your driver distances....

No-one said it does, it's the averages that people are questioning. I played with a 22 h'capper the other week. He had the ability to hit his driver an absolute mile. On one hole he must have hit approaching 300yds, it can be done. His average however was closer to 200yds, it was hard to measure as the ball was always in the clag.

But this is what I was discussing with IainG over the weekend. No one knows their real average. There would simply be too many shots to measure and then calculate. Surely, the only figure which is meaningful on the tee is the average of the "decent" shots.

I know my usual carry on a decent/good shot will be in the region of 230. An occasional worldy will see that much higher. An occasional duff will see that much lower, but I don't consider the worldy or the duff when choosing a club. I use the club which will, when hit well, put me in the best position for my second.

I would politely suggest to anyone that is focusing on the possibility of a duff from the tee that they are talking themselves into hitting that exact shot..

Even the pros only get certain holes recorded for average purposes, if you were to only record on say,3 holes each week, you should be able to find a reasonably close average figure. Downhill or monster winds wouldnt count.
Some of you guys really pump too much emphasis on distance when it comes to the game though.

all Distances are out the window at the moment.

Our par 4 8th and 9th are both in the region of 355 yards off the whites, the last 4 rounds i hit a 3 iron to lay up to a good wedge appoach. all have been in the regions of 320 yards of which i'm guessing only carried 200 to 220 ish....:(

Agreed
A couple of years back I stuffed a drive on our last (430 yards) and had about 320 to the green - knocked it through with a 3w....
I guess the ball carried 220ish and simply rolled the rest on rock hard fairways.

The only thing you can control, distance-wise, is the carry.
Once the ball lands you're in the lap of the Gods so taking roll into account for how far you hit the ball isn't worth it...
