Teeing in line with or behind markers - not that difficult is it?

Out of clubhouse window yesterday I found myself watching a four ball tee off. First guy sticks his tee peg in the ground and places his ball on it. He then walks away until clear ahead. From 25yds I could see that his ball was teed a good foot in front of the tee markers. Yet he didn't seem to notice, and neither did any of his buddies when they had all the time in the world to point it out to him. How curious. I guess they felt it didn't matter. Does it?

my regular PP often tees in in front of the markers....only an inch or so, but I'll pick him up on it every time. He always laughs it off and blames it on the pegs not being in line..... I always laugh at him and tell him to tee up next to the reds instead.

I'm a tee behind kind of guy. The ground is usually a lot more level back there. All our tee boxes seem to be ball below feet. I do see a lot of thud/scuff marks on the par 4/5 boxes though beyond the markers. I do wonder if they think that extra yard will help out.

I got pulled by the assistant secretary in a comp for teeing up about 1/2" in front of the markers :D he was right but our tee boxes are awful and I'd inadvertently moved the wrong way while trying to find a flattish bit.
I'm always very concious of it now and I won't make the same mistake twice.

I pulled up a PP on Saturday for teeing ahead of the line. Not much - but ahead. Never had anyone grump over it - indeed they always tend to be a bit embarrassed and grateful. I always tee a good 12"-18" behind - choosing a nice clear area of turf. Can't understand why anyone would want to tee up on or as close to the line as possible - which many seem to want to do. But whatever takes yer fancy.

This guy yesterday was so far in front I couldn't believe that neither he nor any of his 3 buddies noticed or could be bothered. Little bit disappointing if they couldn't be bothered to be honest,

focusing on finding the right bit of ground and loosing track of the tee markers is the most common issue for most - especially if they are aligned markers (square of log like) and they aren't aligned properly!

not suggesting it's the case with the OP but most people haven't got a clue about what needs to be where to be in the wrong place either - 1/2" will get you out for some rules heroes and in for those that actually know. If any part of the ball breaks the line across the foremost part of each tee marker you are OK.

On or behind for me depending on the condition of the teeing ground, I have been known to go as far back as 2-3ft if the tee's taken a rite hiding, par 3's are the worst cos nobody ever T's up on our par 3's and they hack the crap outta the T-tops !...

Perhaps all four of them didn't give a toss about the rules and if that's the case then they probably feel that they can play how they damn well please and stuff anyone that thinks different.

Of course if only more FC's stood in the correct HNSP (or whatever its called) then it'd be easier to spot these 1/2 inch infringements!

I'll wager there's many false handicaps out there because of this

played at CS on a stag do and one of the guys in my 4 ball, tee's up well in front of the markers on every hole, despite being pulled up on it.... on every hole. To make things worse he was a member of a club and had a handicap, so should know better.

I generally find in line and up to 18" behind the markers can be worn out, I generally take at least a club back, it's lovely and fresh turf there

You didn't say it was a comp in your opener. Perhaps in an official club comp they might do things differently but in an unofficial one just between themselves they might think they can do what they like and who are we to say otherwise.

Correct - they weren't playing in a comp. And yes - they might do things differently in a comp. But it is such a basic thing and such a simple and non-contentious thing to correct - comp or no - that I wonder how many other rules are ignored during casual play that are then also forgotten about or confused during competition.

And as far as this - well we are members, and the club and golf has rules. This particular rule break is inconsequential in casual play but you just can't say that in casual golf you can do whatever you like.
