Supplementary Cards

Yes, I agree, I stated I knew it was wrong, but I don't make the rules at the club.

But just to play devils advocate here, what else do you need/use a handicap for, if you're not interested in competitive golf.....??
Just curious

I play with my Partner and we are at different levels. I want a handicap, and consider competitive golf as me against the course, but I also don't want to just leave her, and not help her develop. It's a pastime we do together, to spend time together, rather than apart.

Exactly. Club's need to accommodate for all of their members, and not just the perceived majority.

Why do you need an active HC if you aren't going to be play in qualifiers ?

Hopefully soon they make it mandatory that to keep an active HC a certain amount of qualifiers must be played instead of just supplementary cards

Because some people want a handicap for themselves, and for their own development, and that doesn't have to be acquired in a competitive environment against other golfers.

That's great.
But you DO NOT need a handicap to do this.
You could play with your partner, and just give yourself handicaps between you, and adjust up and down accordingly

If you're NOT playing club comes, or Opens, you DO NOT need a handicap

But it's not really a true handicap because you aren't doing it in a competition under the pressure that comes about from that.

You don't need a handicap to be competitive against the course etc and certainly not an active one

If you want an active HC then people should earn one in competitions

Why can't we have an official one through the club we pay £1k+ a year for?

Ridiculous statement, and probably why you are a member of what sounds like a narrow minded, old fashioned, club.

And if you were to enter a competition, your handicap would increase? So what's the issue with having one outside of competitions?

Again, it's an old fashioned assumption to assume you have to be playing competitions to have a handicap. Not everyone wants to play in comps, and play golf for other reasons. That doesn't mean they are not allowed a handicap, or shouldn't have the same benefits as other members. Rather, clubs should accommodate for all kinds of players and members.

You can have a HC just not an active one

It's one of the changes that Congu were thinking of for the future

If someone wants an active HC then they will need to play a certain amount of qualifying comps

Then administer it yourself and sort your own HC out - simple as that.

Not really, as it would be nice to have an official one through the club, put in your supplementary cards, and still feel involved. Actually....Simple as that.
Then be involved and play in the comps like everyone else and have a proper HC - support the competitions.

It will be a welcome change to Congu

I tHink there's sites that will administer an unofficial handicap for you. It would then be sort of official between the 2 of you.
I don't know how they work or if they charge?

You know that isn't going to happen ahead of 2020, and will be irelevant afters!

They have done their tweaking.

It's my first year as a club member and I've never considered handing in supplementary cards so don't know much about them. However, I do know that my club accepts them.

Outside of the competitions, I play off the yellows, can I still hand in a supplementary card as long as it's marked by a member? Could we both hand cards in - by marking each other's?

Thanks,
Shep

Not necessarily true if going by what the Congu rep said last week. And the 2020 date isn't set in stone

Yep you can both hand in cards marked by each other - the only provision is you have both signed the book before hand

At my club, for supplementary cards, you have to play off the yellow (box) tees despite normally being allowed to play off the whites. Reason being is that the keepers sometimes move our very back tees forward a bit if their is not a competition on.

Our par is 71 and the medal tees SSS is 72, but off the boxes the SSS is only 70. This makes it tricky for a supplementary score if you are single figures.

i played one this year, to make buffer I have to be round in 7 over. I had a nightmare front 9 (our easier 9) of 7 over but managed to come back in level par to just make the buffer. Won't be doing these very often despite our club not having very many medals. We only have about 15 weekend counting comps per year, including winter monthly medals.

Ha ha
Narrow minded.....??

You said you don't play competitive golf
So I just told you that you do not need a handicap
But yes, of course, you can have one

Narrow minded old fashioned club....??
Ha, it's an ex muni, full of working class people

I also stated the club were wrong
So don't get your point whatsoever.....??

The actions of the club are not of my making, I just repeated that my club is run similar to Fyldewhite club
