I still have not got the hang of this posting - nothing seems to work the way I want - hoping that the images can just be viewed without a link!!!! Arrrgggghhhhhhh
Have to try it this way - if it works it is a chronological tour from the fourth green on the New
What a great day overall - quality of golf aside!! Sunnigdale is a class act. The lunch is good but a couple of notches below the best - namely RSG and The Berkshire (followed by Swinley and Hankley)
The courses are, it goes without saying, very special. But I will go against the trend and say that I think the New is A LOT Better than the Old! Whereas the Old has a few weaker holes that are not in the same league as any on the New - namely 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 13 and 14 (this may be a bit strong a statement but it conveys my overall view). The New is simply AWESOME! The only slightly weaker holes are 16-18 (and they could all be easily improved with a bit of tree clearance on 16 and 18 and more heather on 17) - and this is where the Old beats the New with a strong finish - although these 3 holes on the New are far from poor and, as mentioned, better than the weaker holes on the Old.
The New is probably the best golf course I have ever played and a treat not to be missed. Combined with the Old, which may not be any better than the Berkshire Red (and is probably weaker due to more weaker holes), this is the top day out in UK Golf. I hope you enjoy the photos - there are a few highlights of the old at the end - because the good on the Old is simply spectacular (4, 5, 7, 10, 12, 17)- although the best 4 holes on the property still belong to the New - 5, 6, 9 and 10 (with 4, 7, 11, 12, 14 and 15 not far behind)
See what mean about the views from Old 10 and 5/6 of New? Even better from the very back tees on 6 or along the ridge down 9. Some, at least 1, of the original holes (I think) can even be seen from that ridge.
I'm not sure how useful this will be, because I'm not a big food aficionado and have a dreadful memory for golf holes.
The carvery lunch had starters that I daren't touch as I hadn't a clue what they were or tasted like, but the main was good, with probably the nicest potatoes and veg that I've had in a long time. I can't compare to any other golf course lunches though.
Both courses were very nice, with the new imo having far more strong holes than the old. It was relentless. Hole after hole that could bite you in the backside. Add to that a bad day swinging, and a driver set up wrong, and the result is not a lot of points. 15 on the new and 26 on the old (driver set up sorted pm) to be precise. It only slightly reflects how hard the courses are though. I would say I played garbage but it wasn't as good as that
I was disappointed in the bunkers though. Twice I played out of greenside bunkers and had the club bounce off of mud about 1/4" underneath the surface.
As for value, I wouldn't say so. I'm glad I did it and may well do it again next year, but (impossible to get on ones aside) is ANY course really worth that much to play a round of golf on for a few hours?
We did have a giggle though. Even the poor guy that ended up stuck with us for the day ended up resigned to just having a laugh. I don't think we did his game any good.
Good to hear you had a good time Paul and Gary. I played the Old years ago, but really looking forward to playing the New next year, after Paul's glowing report. The pictures look fantastic, well the ones without Paul in his shorts.
Paul I have got a H4H fourball voucher for The Berkshire that includes the carvery.
Played the New a long time ago and it bought back some not so happy memories - I got chewed up too.
Wonderful course, my main memory was some of the carries across the heather.........
