OMG Steve Stricker just hit a par 3 green with a 7I from 182yds. OK all pros can do that I hear you say. I studied his backswing closely and I cant believe how short it was. Nevermind talking about it going beyond horizontal the club barely makes it back half way and is just (and I mean just) beyond vertical!!!

A lesson for us all I think and one thing I will be doing in 2012 is to try and make my swing more compact.

I watched him at a comp last year. 180 odd to the pin, half a flick with an 8i. And he was long. I don't mind the pro's hitting it long, but I would like them to look like they are hitting it. Stricker particularly is taking the Mick.

Am I being dim, or is it not really that short, the only reason he doesn't get to the top is because his swing tries to limit wrist cock - or did I dream that?

"The key to Stricker's swing is, it has fewer moving parts: It's a stiff-wristed action controlled by a big body turn. Most better players maximize wrist hinge on the backswing to gain leverage at impact -- like cracking a whip -- but Stricker's wrists are fairly quiet. That's why his swing is shorter, and why he's among the top 30 on tour in hitting fairways." apparently..?!

even though he looks like he is hitting it easy he is probably still generating a lot of clubhead speed.he still has a good shoulder turn and the arc is quite big,a lot like ernie's.

so effortless,i always get the impression with strickers swing that not muc can go wrong, and you get the feeling he is going to knock it close everytime.

from 125 yrds in he is a demon...what a putt on 18!!!!

I dont have a still of Stricker because I just watched footage on Sky, however the swing that he used to hit the ball 182 yds with a 7I was just like this one. Quite probably the ball is going the same distance in this clip below as well. Looks like a half swing to me, I dont know about anyone else but my 7I will be just short of parallel at the top and I hit it about 150-160yds. He has half a swing and hits it 182 yds!!!

Less is more? Just a thought.

he does make a full turn, what to notice is the position of his left arm.this is a good indication of how much rotation he has, even though it looks like a very short swing it's actually just that little bit longer than you think.

he keeps the wrists quite solid and because of this the club never gets as close to parallel as it could do.

It is some hit. But it just goes to prove one thing doesn't it. Do you really need to see your club head out of your left eye on the back swing? Keep it short, keep it simple and keep control of the club and concentrate on a sweet strike rather than hitting it hard.

Thats the point I was trying to make. Sure Woodland and others take even less club and get home from 182 yds. Tiger took 8I and he was long on the same hole. But its the fact that Strickers swing was soooo short that was so impressive.

In the past when I've deliberately tried swinging short and asked people to spot where the club finishes they often say parallel or just short of parallel. It goes to show that when I think its a really short backswing it nearly always isn't, far from it.

So is short backswing the way to go? Does anyone consciously swing short or even know how long their backswings are?

Rather than some magic secret to power that amateurs aren't privy to maybe it's because the pro's technique is about a brazillion times better than ours?

Yes I hear what you say, its not a magic cure and of course their swings are much better but it doesnt hurt to keep chipping away at the bad habits.

Not sure it is half a swing. Watching the video clip the hands seem to get to at least shoulder height with a good full turn. More like a compact 3/4 swing which would explain how he gets it so far. I can't see anyone trying to only hit 1/2 swings so think it is all a bit of an optical illusion. Maybe Bob the swing guru can shed some definitive light on it
