St Mellion

Oi Lewis... you've missed out about 13 "narrows and really narrows!"

13 is ok. You just need to hit a solid drive or 3 wood past the bunker on the left.
Are you thinking of 12? The par 5 with water in front of the green (the stream runs down the right of the hole, before crossing in front of the green).

I've got the shot saver for the Nicklaus course in my bag. I pretend play it when I'm at the range as it really puts pressure on to hit shots.
I've imaginary played it well and I've also given up as my imaginary scoring was poor! Not sure if anyone else does this.

I played there last winter in some of the worse weather I've played golf in, wet, cold and extremely windy, and got well and truly beaten up by the course but I'd still go back there tomorrow.

sorry... it was my clumsy writing!

I was joking, meaning you missed out 13 other possible references to narrow holes!!!

12 looks very very narrow off the tee.... hole 13 is one of the easier ones!

Gotcha!

Absolutely right.
I don't think there are any easy holes on that course. Anything off line is not good.

I've shot 38 points round there. But last year I shot 24 (6 on the front 9!). I didn't say much that day.

Its always been on my list to play St Mellion ever since watching the european tour event there regulary on tv,it just looked like such an awesome track especially with that drop off a cliff par 3 so i'm planning a trip to play it this year.Any of you guys played it in recent years and is it still the course it once was?

I don't think enough credit has been given to the tranquil beauty of the place. It's a cracker!
Loads of stone built streams, brooks etc. A joy even if you don't play your best.
It is quite a test, but if you play % and avoid "no go" areas you'll score well enough.

I go there with a group every year, I love the place. Both courses complement each other perfectly. On the Nicklaus accuracy off the tee is paramount, as others have said take plenty of balls as you will lose loads if your driving is bad

Also another recommendation for the Weary Friar, lovely pub with great food. The fish and chips is legendary!

Yes it was. The B&H if I remember right.

As others have said it is really tough, but the last time I went was with a group of 8 with handicaps up to 20 and everyone loved it even though nobody scored well.

So tough that it's rumoured to be one of the reasons the B&H moved. The Pros didn't like how tough it was!
I've wanted to play it since it appeared on an early computer game - used to burn it up on the PC😁

No doubt about it, it's a fantastic place to play, brilliantly constructed and maintained. Just a course that bites, and keeps on biting from start to finish and always hard going. No respite even if you're playing well

My only gripe is on the stroke 1 hole, 14th I think. In the middle of the fairway at driving distance are some random humps with long grass growing out of them. They are not visible from the tee so it makes it worse when you land in one of them.

You don't want that invite to the Alverstone then, I will pass it to a proper golfer :whoo:

Ha ha, you aint making me bite :D I am not Patrick ;)

Depends on if Birchy is playing. I hope you sent is two cards into Davyhulme.....although not sure they have a handicap committee there.:D

Your squirming reading this, arent you?

Squirming

Playing twice on the Nicklaus in May so I will give you my valued opinion then ;)

Played it enjoyed it but for the 5 hour round. Can get really busy and slow. The marshals come around in the buggy to inform us how we were doing time wise but didn't need to know that I was still on the course 4 plus hours later.and it wasn't my group that was slow

That's the first I've ever heard of this. I must have played the course over 20 times and I've never had to wait on a tee. Must be my good luck and your bad luck. The ying and yang of golf.

You won't regret playing mellion, fantastic place. Depends on the tees of the day but off the yellows you really don't need to hit driver, maybe the 6th? But you really can plod around if you don't mind a few longer iron parachute shots. disagree about the Kernow tho. I thought it was very average.

I can honestly say I've never noticed how long it's taken to go round the Nicklaus course, although I've not played it loads.

It's going to take a little longer than usual because yes, it's a resort course, but there's also a few treks between holes (with decent inclines).
Apart from that, it's not the worst place in the world to be waiting around for a few minutes.

If I remember correctly the official reason why it was taken off the tour roster was cos of the logistics, they basically said it was too difficult for the players to get to,seems like there was another reason ;).
