SPOTY - That time of year again!

And that's the problem..
Winning a US Open one year is enough to win SPOTY..
Winning a US Open the next year doesn't even merit a nomination...
One has to ask what Fitz needed to do to even get nominated let alone win...that's the problem with SPOTY...

Be a hot 18 year old female rather than a dull yorkshire lad.................

I guess the panel don’t see the achievements on the same historic level

Fitzpatrick won an event that in recent years 3 other UK golfers have won , was it a standout achievement in UK sport or standout achievement in Golf ?

Radacanu did something no other British Female Tennis player had ever done in the modern era - it was unprecedented her achievements

The UK have had many golf majors winners over the last 50 years - think it’s one other Female Tennis Grand Slam winner

Fitzpatrick achievement was superb - it seems the panel thought there was 6 other achievements that were above him during 2022

- Sue Barker won the French ,
- Virginia Wade won Wimbledon and the US Open as well as 4 doubles titles ,
- Ann Jones won the French twice and Wimbledon once, plus 3 French doubles titles

Are Scotland not part of the UK now ?‍♂️

Believe there was 12 teams in total going for the gold in Curling , the Winter Olympics was one of the biggest sporting events of 2022 behind the World Cup - in the Winter Olympics we won two medals , both in Curling , so in a sport historically dominated by other countries is a stand out achievement

I never said Scotland wasn’t in the UK!

And there’s a reason the “sport” of curling is dominated by other countries. Because in the UK we largely don’t bother with it. Just because six million had their TV’s tuned in to watch it at midnight, it doesn’t suddenly elevate curling beyond something which the vast, vast majority of us have little more than a passing interest in once every four years.

Hats off to Eve Muirhead and co for their achievements. But it doesn’t follow that she is SPOTY material because of those achievements. That’s my point, Phil.

So basically the SPOTY should only been from sports that are mainstream and people watch on a weekly basis ?

Can you not see how big an achievement it is that someone can win the biggest competition in their sport against all the other main competitors?

Is there a list of sports where the winner can only come from then ?

Most people only watch rowing every 4 years , or many other Olympic sports - shall we discount them , in fact just remove all the winter Olympic sports as well ?

What is the criteria that means that someone should be allowed to be nominated for SPOTY - if capturing the imagination of millions isn’t enough what is ?

This is the criteria

BBC SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR AWARD
This award goes to the sportsperson whose sporting actions have most captured the UK public's imagination during 2022.
An expert independent panel (hereafter 'the Panel') will convene in November 2022 to decide the shortlist of sportspeople for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. The composition of the Panel is published below.
The BBC Sports Personality of the Year production team will provide the Panel with an extensive list of the top sportspeople from 2022, including information on their achievements. The Panel will be free to consider other potential candidates.
The Panel will select a shortlist of sportspeople for the main award on the basis of the following criteria:
  • Reflects UK sporting achievements on the national and/or international stage;
  • Represents the breadth and depth of UK sports; and
  • Takes into account 'impact' of the person's sporting achievement beyond the sport in question.
Sportspeople are eligible to be nominated for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award if they are UK citizens or all of the following criteria apply:
  • they play a significant amount of their sport in the UK; and
  • their core achievements that year were achieved in the UK, and not with a non-UK based team (in which case they would more likely qualify for the World Sport Star award); and
  • they are residents in the UK.
Non-playing coaches or management are not eligible.

It seems Eve Muirhead more than satisfies the criteria

Phil, really, does every discussion have to descend into “I’m right, you’re wrong”?! There really is no need to cut and paste SPOTY nomination criteria to try and prove a point. My opinion differs from yours, that’s all.

You will note I have never said I don’t admire Eve Muirhead’s achievements. Merely that, in my view, that doesn’t mean she should be on this shortlist. Which rather answers your opening paragraph. As a mainstream viewing event, something which SPOTY still strives to be, do you not think it utterly pointless if it’s populated primarily by sports which don’t hold mass appeal? Nobody will watch.

Can people not have a debate or discussion and challenge other peoples point of view anymore ?‍♂️ - it’s not about right and wrong it’s about discussions over opinions

The criteria was posted to show you why she was worthy of the nomination because she fulfilled the criteria set out by the awards ?

The award isnt about finding the SPOTY from the sports that have mass appeal - it’s about finding the SPOTY from all sports regardless of how many people watch them or the “mass appeal” of a sport - if we only care about those sports that appeal to the masses then what’s the point of the other sports ?

So we might as well just stick with the most popular sports - running , swimming , Hill, football , netball

It’s just the constant need to argue the toss/debate over EVERYTHING.
Just chill out buddy, don’t take the forum so seriously.
More to life than arguing with people on social media ????

And what you are doing is refusing to accept that someone else has a different opinion to yours, you are responding with the same arguments you posted yesterday,

What has happened before is you keep on and on until someone has had enough and snaps resulting in them getting an infraction. Well it’s time to stop.

Learning when to agree to disagree and moving on is an art form you need to learn. I’ve said this before, many times.

By all means discuss and debate, but if the argument ends up going round in circles and repeating then it needs to stop ?

Phil, I agree that arguments going round in circles are pointless. It would be great to see you (and the other mods) apply such a quick “stop” to this across the board on all threads.

Always makes me laugh when people have so little interest in a subject they have to comment about it ?
We have it with the F1 threads as well, those of us that enjoy it and want to duscuss it have to put up with those that don't coming on and telling the world how boring it is. Its loke anything, if you don't like it don't wat h it. I enjoy SPOTY, not fir the winner or other awards but as a look back over the sporting year.

I’m getting bored by formula 1 these days…where’s the thread so I can moan about it?

This thread is ridiculous and I'm sorry Phil but it's all down to you. The very person who bemoans those we've lost can literally wreck a thread by coming back time and time and time again to get your point across. We get it. You like SPOTY. Others don't.

I actually do - but you're changing that!

Could be said of many posters on many threads.
With quite a few who do it only to wind Phil up.
