SPOTY - That time of year again!

The criteria to be SPOTY involve doing most of your sporting achievements in the UK in theory but not sure how much they really adhere to this. In theory if he rips it up for Real continually, he shouldn’t be in the conversation unless he’s also doing it for England and contributing to their success.
The criteria are:

The Panel will select a shortlist of sportspeople for the main award on the basis of the following criteria:
• Reflects UK sporting achievements on the national and/or international stage;
• Represents the breadth and depth of UK sports; and
• Takes into account 'impact' of the person's sporting achievement beyond the sport in question.

Sportspeople are eligible to be nominated for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award if they are UK citizens or all of the following criteria apply:
• they play a significant amount of their sport in the UK; and
• their core achievements that year were achieved in the UK, and not with a non-UK based team (in which case they would more likely qualify for the World Sport Star award); and
• they are residents in the UK.

I think the second set of bullet points are what you refer to? However, it should be noted that above the bullet points, it shows that these are only relevant if they are non-UK citizens (due to the word "or"). Jude Bellingham is a UK citizen, so he'd be eligible regardless. The first set of bullet points apply to him. If he is tearing it up in the Champions League and La Liga, then he is playing at an extremely high level on the international stage. He is representing the talent of an Englishman globally, something to take pride in. At any rate, even if England don't win anything, if he is still playing wonderful football for England and significantly helping their chances every time he takes the field, then I'd say he is still doing it for England.

So, if he continues on the path he seems to be taking, then he will absolutely be in the conversation.

Turned it off after the unsung hero award. Typical BBC giving it to a Windrush passenger and never even mentioned who or what all the other nominees had done. It was clear they didn't stand a chance once the Beeb discovered one nomination could tick their boxes.

Used to love this show, now its just a joke, although I am glad Mary Earps won, as at least she has some personality, unlike some of the other nominations in that category.

Joey Barton wading in again about women’s football 🤬 What a complete………
Whilst he's entitled to his opinion i really really hope his outbursts mean no media outlet would touch him with a bargepole and he fades into obscurity, retreats back under the fock from whence he emerged and has to finance his lifestyle by selling foot pics.......such an undesirable sub-human.

He has clearly given up on being employed as a football manager again, or being employed at all. Perhaps he wants to be a regular guest on Piers Morgan

Kane is likely to smash records at Bayern this season. Anyone think he will win this next season if England don't win the Euro's? It really doesn't matter though, it's prestige or value is on the deck.
I certainly think he could. He was always going to struggle at Spurs to win an award. But if he is very successful on a team and individual level at Bayern, I definitely think he has potential to be up for the award.

Don’t forget though there is no PL football on the BBC apart from MOTD.
So footballers ( male ones ) don’t feature on it.

I didn't think the BBC had any golf or cricket either, yet McIlroy and Broad were nominated? I'm not sure if the theory that only sports people that play a sport televised by the BBC only tend to be nominated is an urban myth.

You could be right, but just for completeness the BBC did televise the 100 - although Broad didn't play in it.

Haven't watched it for years.
Last week I thought world champion at the heptathlon was very worthy reason to win.
It has always been BBC Sporting Achievement Of The Year Award. I don't think "personality" has ever been much of a criterion.

I was, however, delighted and surprised to see Mary and her outfit (or lack of it) on the front page of The Times while trying to eat my breakfast and drink my coffee.
Well done Mary.

I wonder how many of the people (not referring to anyone on this forum) who are complaining about the winner actually voted? Bit like in politics, those who seem to moan most didn’t bother voting so they should just shut up

I didn’t watch all of the show, dipping in and out of it like a magazine just watching the bits that grabbed me. Thought the Frankie Dettorie piece dragged on far too long but, in the main, I thought the Beeb did a better job than usual.

Chuffed to bits with the winner. Great keeper, and a larger than life character too.

But where was McIlroy? I’ve seen a few snippets saying he was due to appear but didn’t turn up. Was he?
