The criteria are:The criteria to be SPOTY involve doing most of your sporting achievements in the UK in theory but not sure how much they really adhere to this. In theory if he rips it up for Real continually, he shouldn’t be in the conversation unless he’s also doing it for England and contributing to their success.
The Panel will select a shortlist of sportspeople for the main award on the basis of the following criteria:
• Reflects UK sporting achievements on the national and/or international stage;
• Represents the breadth and depth of UK sports; and
• Takes into account 'impact' of the person's sporting achievement beyond the sport in question.
Sportspeople are eligible to be nominated for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award if they are UK citizens or all of the following criteria apply:
• they play a significant amount of their sport in the UK; and
• their core achievements that year were achieved in the UK, and not with a non-UK based team (in which case they would more likely qualify for the World Sport Star award); and
• they are residents in the UK.
I think the second set of bullet points are what you refer to? However, it should be noted that above the bullet points, it shows that these are only relevant if they are non-UK citizens (due to the word "or"). Jude Bellingham is a UK citizen, so he'd be eligible regardless. The first set of bullet points apply to him. If he is tearing it up in the Champions League and La Liga, then he is playing at an extremely high level on the international stage. He is representing the talent of an Englishman globally, something to take pride in. At any rate, even if England don't win anything, if he is still playing wonderful football for England and significantly helping their chances every time he takes the field, then I'd say he is still doing it for England.
So, if he continues on the path he seems to be taking, then he will absolutely be in the conversation.
