SPOTY 2025

If the BBC can afford to buy premier league highlights it can afford a golf tournament.

But it doesn’t make sense for the BBC to televise the Open when another channel is televising golf week in week out and has all the expertise, equipment and staff to produce golf.
Are you saying the BBC should ditch MOTD so they can buy the rights for a golf tournament instead.

Or do you mean that if they can afford MOTD, then they must have at least double that amount of money to buy another sport as well?

The cost to buy Match of the Day in a 3 year deal = £211.5 million.

Sky pay the R&A £15 million a year for 5 years for the Open = £75 million.

It looks like it’s relatively small change to buy the rights for the Open, that’s assuming they had another £15m in their back pocket.

I wonder if the R&A are happy to sell the Open in an annual deal, rather than multi year deal?

I also wonder just how popular the BBC would be in securing the deal for the Open? Four days in the entire year, showing a sport that a minority of the general public will likely watch.

Compared to MOTD, at least twice a week for about 10 months, showing a sport that is by far the most popular in the UK.

Also, I wonder how much Sky spend beyond buying the rights? That links in to what you said. I bet Sky have invested heavily in the equipment and expertise to show golf. Albeit, I'm sure the BBC can afford to buy a new beach ball for Ken Brown.
