SPOTY - That time of year again!

Team of the year. Coach of the year. Likely SPOTY of the year too, all to the Lionesses. Zero complaints.

Only Stokes could run the individual close for what he has been instrumental in with the Test team, but Meado should win

So, according to the BBC only 7 people have done something worthwhile this year in the world of sports. Time to retire this programme.
It stopped being relevant, or interesting, many years ago. The avoidance of sports or moments not shown on the channel was the start of the death knell. Thankfully we now have streaming channels to watch when this type of stuff is on.

Not going to compete with the Lionesses but the Tigers move from bottom of the table to winning the league should get them a nomination for Team of the Year and Coach of the Year. Suspect England Cricket Team have a chance of being team of the year with the World Cup Win and also have a shot at coach of the year. The Red Roses should be in with a shout as World Cup finalists and with the longest ever unbeaten run. Would have won the world cup if they were not one player down after only 10 minutes.

Sir Kev must be a shoe in for a special award.

Three of them I've never heard of. Can't see Ronnie winning it, although he's the best of all time in his field, I think his attitude divides opinion somewhat. Don't watch cricket so no idea what Stokes has done this year. But I agree with the OP, it will certainly be Beth Mead after the hype and euphoria of the women winning the Euros.

My only concern is that women's football really does seem to be a trigger for the worst in some people and that could deflect votes elsewhere.

The BBC produce some great content, but sadly this should've been retired long ago.

I am not totally behind it being retired as it is an institution. The problems started when the BBC lost most if its television rights and so what was the sports review of the year had to focus on the sports personality award as the BBC had no fottage to show. If they cannot reach agreement with out broadcasters, perhaps the trophy should be handed to Sky to present and do the show with the BBC having rights to show it as well.

I make the same comment every year, but ever since the BBC lost the rights to screen virtually any live sport, and hence produce decent highlights packages for SPOTY, it really hasn’t been worth watching. I’ve barely bothered since Daley Thompson let out a naughty word during his acceptance speech.

Sad, because it used to make for excellent viewing every December.

I used to enjoy watching it, but not these days. I'm looking forward to WSM even though I know who's won ?

Agree, it was much better as a review of the year with highlights and the sports stars doing demos/tricks in the studio. The highlights package nowadays is very small

That was it, the whole show was a massive highllights package of a year in sport with everyone who took part in the events forming the audience. The sports personlity award took up the last 15 minutes or so and that was it. As the access to footage reduced, the award became more and more prominant. Now you have a show with clips from football and Wimbledon and that is pretty much it. Some much loved sports may as well not exist as they no longer even get a mention.

Time for a good program and also time for the standard “not relevant” “winner doesn’t have personality” “BBC don’t have enough sport” “such and such golfer” should get in etc etc

Winning a golf major not even seen worthy of a nomination these days. Shows the esteem in which the sport is held.

....by the BBC...

I thought being from Yorkshire got you "oppressed minority" status, so would normally be a cert to win!

FWIW - I have heard of three, never heard of the other three. It used to be a Christmas TV Institution, but now haven't watched it in years!

Edit... just read up the list... several are a blooming joke. Some geezer called Jake, won one race and didn't win two others they mention! :ROFLMAO:

Just shows the BBC are desperate for footage.

Being from Yorkshire I doubt he gives a shiny about who Bartholomew and Abigail, in the BBC offices, select for the SPOTY finalists. ;-)

The move from sports review to celeb culture "personality" killed all credibility and interest for me. Just 2 hours of virtue signalling now.

I'm also glad the BBC has no frottage to show :LOL:
