SPOTY - That time of year again!

It seems as if the BBC PR department really care.

The winners seem to care as do a lot of the sporting community- it still appears to be a prestigious award for people to win

Does anyone actually care who wins this?
Honestly, not really. The short list is a bit of a joke - Stokes I get, Beth Mead sort of (though what she did to be picked ahead of the others in her side I have no idea) but thereafter its a tad odd. What did Matt Fitzpatrick, Jonny Bairstow, Cameron Norrie do to offend them?

Moreover, it feels a bit too woke. How does the lass who won the Floor Gold get nominated, but the bloke who won it does not?

Ho hum.

Todays buzz word in SPOTY is now personality. So who chucked beer all over there pubs when we won Curling, Gymnastics etc etc. No one.
Where is Tyson Fury who is still undefeated. Still didn’t Chuck me beer though.
SPOTY is now for me an irrelevant show.

Always makes me laugh when people have so little interest in a subject they have to comment about it ?

I guess I want to be interested, it was a massive thing when growing up but now just a shadow of that. There is a big place for an annual celebration of sporting achievement but this is not it and is now slightly embarrassing. I think people used to care and want to care again and hence the comments

Sorry but who is “embarrassed” by it ?‍♂️

It's pretty cringey stuff.
Which is standard Award ceremony stuff which has been the way for decades

It’s a program to give an awards to sporting stars and teams - it’s always quite staggering how some react to it

The point was that this is not what it was, it was the sports review of the year that ended with the presentation. The focus was a review of the year's sporting achievement

The show is pretty embarrassing quality wise compared to what it used to be. It is overly staged and as said, cringey, embarrassing that this is meant to be the annual celebration of sporting achievement
What’s different to how it was 20 years ago ?

They run through the nominees

They go through as many sports showing highlights of each sport and the many achievements they can fit in - have the odd bit of cheese , multiple interviews and then hand out the awards

It’s your standard award ceremony and each year it’s full of the countries sports stars

I watch it every year and apart from the odd gimmick it’s no different than when I first started watching it in the 80’s

What should it be ?

20 years ago was only 2002, from my point of view, and I guess a few others, they are comparing it to what it was going much further back. I have been watching it since the 70's. The whole thing was totally different focused on the review if the year in sport with loads of footage and interviews and the award was presented at the end. The focus was the review of the year with none of the standard awards ceremony stuff

It still has loads of footage , they now do a lot more different sports across the night and not just mainstream sports , also highlight a lot more local sports with the unsung award.

It has a bit more “jazz” and they try to make it a bit more modern to ensure it appeals to both new and old

But the premise of the show is the same

Footage of sporting events - hand out awards , interview multiple sports stars

And this is where we disagree as I feel it has slipped from being a great retrospective to something that is cheesy and a shadow of it's former self. Not sure that many who have been watching it for 40 plus years would agree that is anything but a shadow of it's former self but that is just my opinion

I still watch it and look forward to it every year - it's tradition...bit like The Royal Variety I'm currently watching.

I think the shortlist this year is plain weird. Gymnast and athlete...can't see how they get in ahead of Fitzpatrick to be honest but then such shortlists will always be tricky and I guess we're lucky to have so many to choose from who've achieved sporting greatness (or sort of anyhow).

I'll watch the section on those we've lost this year and, as always, shed a tear and think "oh blimey I'd forgotten they'd passed"

Truthfully the BBC and sport parted company some years back!
