SPOTY - That time of year again!

I suspect if we went on forums for other sports they would be having the same arguments/discussions about whether their sport should have more coverage or nominations. It is a 2 hour program with 6 people on the shortlist, do people honestly think they can have every person who who something featured? What should they have cut out to feature more golf? Not covered Rob Burrows?

He’s not wrong though!

Maybe Golf and golfers need to look inwards at the reasons why

The Sport itself looked for more money , golfers looked for more money and to get that meant removing the Open from the protected list and then subscription Telly stepping in to pay the money.

What else are the BBC supposed to do ?‍♂️ they only gave rowing a sport they do broadcast about a mins worth

If the sport and the top professional golfers want to see terrestrial Telly take more of an interest than play more top level golf in the UK and allow the terrestrial Telly to broadcast the events.

Both tennis and cricket put major finals on terrestrial Telly and it’s no doubt helped the viewing levels of those sports

Not bothered one bit Fitzpatrick wasn't nominated. It was a great win by him, and certainly had plenty of praise in the golfing world. Brilliant for him.

But, it is not massively special in the world of sport. He has done something many that has been done plenty before, with British players winning one of the 4 Majors over the years.

Had he won multiple Majors, or achieved a Major record, then I could see him having a chance to he nominated. Had Westwood 2 a Major, I coukd have seen him being nominated. Because there is a bigger story surrounding it, adds "personality" to that story and heard more loudly in the sporting world.

Not sure why people get so wound up. Don't like it, don't watch it. Sports Personality was such a big thing years ago as we only had 3 or 4 channels to watch, and it would be a big event for sports fans. We now can watch hubdred times more sport on TV, across numerous channels, and certainly bigger sporting channels than BBC. So, of course it isn't what it used to be, and never will be.

I just assumed it's because outside of a few highlights shows they have next to no Golf coverage to call on

They have a lot of sport to cram in through the show , they seemed to focus on the big events that BBC covered and then other sports where someone was nominated , there were other sports that got about a minutes worth of highlights.

I’m not sure what else people expected

Golf spent years trying to get The Open removed from the sporting Crown Jewels of protected events so that it could pick up the extra millions from Sky

People blame BBC for that when maybe they should blame the R&A

I did actaully put it on the iplayer today but turned off after 15 mins, it's just boring.

Though when you read his responses to posts made against his opener he rather excuses the BBC and understands why SPOTY didn’t much consider golf, and he makes clear that his concern is more about the light in which golf is viewed by much, if not most, of the non-golfing public.

So for instance, I don’t know how much tax-payers money goes into growing golf, but I suspect that were it to be more than tuppence ha’penny and that became widely known, there would be some outcry about public money subsidising the pastime of an elite - comprising in the main wealthy white middle class men - especially with £££££££s in prize money swilling around.

The govt gives grants to most sports at grass roots level, it's pretty standard. They gave around £50m to football last year for example, hardly a sport that is poor at the top end. Money usually goes to help kids start up a sport, coaching, equipment etc. It doesn't go to an elite as you put it.

I'm not sure why you want to put golf down this way, why would anyone hammer local clubs trying to help kids get into a sport?

Mike has highlighted the issue as he sees it…the perception many out there have of golf and golfers as I described.
