Sports Personality of the Year 2012...

As this year really is a 'special' year probably never to be repeated, plus you cant pick 1 person out that lot that has achieved something more exceptional than another- like comparing apples and Oranges -

so my vote would be for a 'Sports PEOPLE of the year' and have 3 winners and 3 seconds and 3 in third place. It means 9 people and probably 9 sports are recognized in this quite unique year of sport for Team GB

It's a coin toss between Bradley Wiggins and Andy Murray; first ever British TdF winner and first British male grand slam winner in donkeys years.

And each got an Olympic gold medal as well just for the icing on the cake!

Personality has several definitions amongst which is: a famous, notable or prominent person.

As to who should win, for me it's Wiggins, Murray, Ennis in that order.......I think it will be the Mobot though.

As above. Given the tremendous across-the-board sporting achievements by UK athletes and sportspeoples, 2012 would be an ideal opportunity for the BBC to make a symbolic gesture in their award i.e. The Unknown Athlete sort of thing and simply use the 3 or 4 hour slot as a straight up sporting review. Then again, the BBC are probably contractually obligated to their telecomms provider to rake in a couple of million phone calls

I personally dont think Murray will win it, I think if he had won Wimbledon and the Gold medal rather than the US open then I think he would have been nailed on. Due to the US open being on Sky I dont think a lot of people would of been able to get into the emotions of it as they do at Wimbledon. His achievement is mammoth and I think he may get a top 3 but its so hard to pick people.

I think you could pick out a handful of Olympians and Paralympians which would all stand a good arguement to win it. Rutherford, Ennis, Farah, Ainslie, Hoy, Weir, Simmonds are all names that I could think of who could stand a chance of winning it. Then you move onto cycling and Wiggins done something no British person had ever done before and won the Tour De France followed by an Olympic medal, who can forget Chris Froome who really helped Wiggins achieve this and then also got an Olympic medal.

I think a footballer will make it on the list and I think it will be Frank Lampard, winning the champions league and captaining the side that evening against all the odds.

Rory McIlroy has won a major this year so again deserves to be up there. Also with the Ryder cup coming up this could boost a golfers chance of making it on the list.

At the moment no individual cricketer probably deserves to be on that list, how ever you have the world t20 coming up so one of them could easily chuck their name in the hat.

It would not surprise me one bit if any of the mentioned above were to make it to the top 3. Picking a winner I dont have a hope in hell of trying that.

Frank Lampard??????

The reason is is Sports Personality derives frmo its birth in 1954. "Sportsview" was BBC's sports programme. That year they wanted to do a sports review of teh year, and the intention was to have a public ballot for teh sportswoman and man of teh year. However this proposal clashed with the already existing "Sporting Record" awards, and SR did not want the BBC Sportsview initiative to impact on their own awards. Thereforem or concurrently, BBC decided that their award would only apply to "sporting personalitie" who had appeared on Sportsview during teh year. So it was actually called the "Sportsview Personality of the Year" in the inaugural year in 1954, in which is was voted for by the public

Just before the Olympics, I checked the odds for SPOTY. Bradley Wiggins was a massive odds on favourite @1/10

Different kettle of fish now though, I think it is completely wide open. Wiggo is still the bookies favourite but could be anyone from those already mentioned.

Best odds on one of the comparison sites are:

Wiggins 5/4
Murray 5/2
Farrah 3/1
Ennis 12/1
Weir 25/1
Simmons 80/1

Hoy and McIlroy both 100/1

interesting that footballers get the grief when it is actually non-F1 championship winning racing drivers that used to win it (moss, Mansell, Hill)

Why is it called Sports PERSONALITY Award when most winners have no or little personality at all?

So because they have a more reserved personality this should diminish their sporting achievements? Introvert, extrovert or autistic spectrum disorder it is the public recognition of sporting achievement not the personality that is being recognized.

All good choices, but I think David Weir deserves to be mentioned also. Great summer for British sport. The overpaid footballers have all had a nightmare tonight in the internationals.
Well this year just making the final ten is an achievement in itself. Pick the bones out of this long list...

Farah, Ennis, Rutherford, Hoy, Wiggins, Trott (also young SPOTY), Kenny, Grainger, Ainslie, Storey, McIlroy, Adams, Murray...

Not mention Cycling, Men's gymnastics, Equestrian, Women's rowing...

And the best news? Not an overpaid, premadonna footballer in sight ;0)

When it comes down to personality it has to be the person that people can associate with and Bradley Wiggins caused a storm with his sidies and newspaper cutouts being printed for the last legs of the TdF.

Football has to take a step back this year and whoever wins it must be special after the year we've had.

After last night - football (certainly of the UK&NI international flavour) will have no difficulty whatsoever in taking a backseat - and as far as League stuff - well - over the coming months most of that will condemn itself in the eyes of many through it's own actions.

I would have gone for Wiggins, but this year is pretty unique and it would be unfair to all the amazing sportsmen and women to single out just one winner.
