Hello all

My works society day is coming up at the end of August and muggins here gets the joy of orgainising it. I'm looking for suggestions for side competitions apart from the obvious closest to the pin and longest drive comps.

I had thought about a random match play. i.e. before the round each player picks a number out of the hat and then their scores are compared to that person at the end of the round. winner gets small prize. thoughts?

2nd idea was similar to first but more of a team comp. i.e. player picks from a hat and is either in blue or red team (europe/usa or whatever). scores for teams added up and each player from winning team gets a small prize. thoughts?

other ideas welcome no matter how whack they sound.

We have done one recently where you play normal stableford BUT the number of putts is subtracted from the stableford score

So if you score 2 points with 1 putt its 1 putt point

pickups are 3 putts , winning score about +7 or 8

we found that people were aiming for the fringe of the green , to minimize the number of putts they took

Didnt always work, but there were some memorable chip ins

Yellow Peril??

4 Balls, best two scores count but yellow ball must always be counted, you pass it through your team each hole, so tactics are used to ensure each handicapper gets the most out of them on certain holes.

My dads loves it

maybe the easiest to manage is a 'blind' pairs, at the end of the day put all the cards in a hat and then pull two out at a time, the highest combied s'ford score wins.

Blind pairs/teams is always a good one.

Simply work out if it's pairs, threes or fours, and then pick names out of a hat yourself (or ask the pro at the course to do it for you) into pairs, threes or fours. Then add the scores together, and see which "team" wins.

Depending on the number of players involved, you may just want to create an excel spreadsheet that can do it for you? I've done it manually for 16, but if you've got 30-odd, I'd go "electronic".

EDITED: FUll Throttle beat me to it!

We do this for Captain's Drive In each year, except the yellow ball counts for double points. It is marked before the round, and must be returned to the organiser after 18 holes for the score to count (but if it's lost, then that's fine, as you can't double count the score thereafter, so in theory no shenannigans going on!). Player 1 plays it on hole 1, player 2 on 2nd and so on in turns for 16 holes. It goes back to the first two players for the last two holes, but you could allow choice of player for the last two either?

Great fun and additional pressure on the one who's turn it is with the yellow ball.

If you can get the club to mark a white line down the middle of a fairway and have a straightest drive competition rather than a longest drive, which after all, can only be won by a few big hitters

I'm a fan of this one. And you may be able to use the mowing pattern to achieve it instead of a painted line.
