Senior stableford scoring system...help...

If you want to discuss Congu vs US vs EGA, start another thread!

Nooooooopo!!!!
You don't realise what you have just done!!
It would be far easier (and less painful for all on here) to point you to the 35,000 (usually conflicting) posts delc has made on this subject elsewhere on the tinterweb and keep them off here.........déjà vue is a bad thing...I can feel a headache coming on.. :o

I run the handicapping system for our swindle........
1 shot off for the winner, 1 shot back for the loser. In addition you get plus or minus 0.1 for every shot above or below the average points for the day.
Works really well and shares the winning around fairly. The winner and loser usually lose/gain 2 shots each swindle meet.
We cap it so that your swindle handicap can never be more than 3 above your club handicap.

So far had pretty positive feedback.......even from the guys playing off plus 4 and plus 3....

Do,you revert back to club handicap at the end of the year ?

We run a weekly senior fiddle at our club an our scoring systems seems to be a little harsh and could be keeping players away ,ie some club handicappers of 18 sometimes get down to 14 and pro rata...I know they must have won the money on a regular basis but it stops them competing and it takes ages to get any points back, do you work any systems that are fairer than ours or do you have any advise please ?this is how we score..
winner minus 1 full point off handicap, if its a score of 40 points plus 2 full points taken off.
2nd place minus 0.5
3rd place minus 0.3
If you achieve 30 or more points you get 0.1 back
29 points or under 0.2 back
We have a for the best player over the period April through September and we score as follows
1st 10 points
2nd 8pts
3rd 6 points
4th 5
5th 4
6th 3
7th 2
8th 1
and all the others 1 point
15 results count
Can you advise on a fairer system

When you say it stops them competing do you mean that they don't have the best of chances of taking the money or they just don't bother turning up? If it's the latter you are probably better off without them.

There's a guy at our club who plays off 16 but in the midweek 9 hole roll ups he is down to scratch and still regularly scores 18 points.

Seems a bit OTT. In our Saturday roll-up, if you win you play off of your club handicap-2 for the next 3 weeks that you play and if you come 2nd it's club handicap-1 for 3 weeks.

If you win or come 2nd while playing off of a cut, the new cut is added to the existing one and the 3 weeks starts again.

What about adding a shot back on for the last place. Seems a popular method elsewhere

We've only just started it but we didn't revert back to club H/caps at the beginning of this seasons swindle (runs until end of March on the middle tees, then onto silver tees for the summer swindle). Currently the plan is to keep going on swindle handicaps but we'll be reviewing it in case we need to change it. If we don't revert back, the main issue will be with new members joining it off typically higher h/caps than the longer term swindlers. This is the reason we dock 2 shots off any guests handicaps that play in the swindle.

We require a member put three cards into the swindle before being able to win and then it's a shot for winning overall and .5 for winning a front or back nine plus others can get cut for playing better than their handicap. Also get .1 back for being out of buffer zone.

Then in December after the Xmas roll up you go back to your club handicap

Some guys lose 8 shots through the year and it seems to ensure a fair spread of winners

I like the idea of the additional 0.5 cut for front and back 9 winners.... Might look at adopting that.

There would appear to be something seriously amiss if that's the case - unless the Comp and Roll-Up courses are significantly different!

Some people play better without the pressure of a medal

Have a number of members in the swindle that have a club handicap of 14-16 yet in swindle is down to 4-6 and they play to it

Some people just can't play with pressure

At ours you get cut if you win money - so that covers first & second places. 36 points or less its 1 shot; above 36 its one shot per 2 points above (so no half shot cuts). Cut lasts 3 games. Gets a bit bizarre if you win in succession - difficult to describe but in essence your extra sentence runs both concurrently and consecutively. Anyone who queries why its like that is given the answer "Because it is." Anyone who queries persistently is cut another shot. Everything is recorded in our "fuhrer's" black book so there's no getting away with anything. Everyone accepts the general system.

What causes general merriment (provided it's not oneself of course) is an outright winner with multiples ties for second - it's feasible to get cut without even managing to recover your stake money.
