Scratch comps in your division

This sounds ok, I'd fancy my chances in the 13-20 group. I don't think the higher handicappers in each section would be seeing much joy.
Overall I think handicapping broadly works and is one of the great things about this game at the club level, pretty happy with it as it is tbh.

I think it would be fairer as the winner of each division will win having played the best golf (gross) in their group without having to rely on a handicap which may or may not be totally accurate to help them win.
And how satisfying would it be to win the scratch prize as oppossed to the net prize for the wrongest (?) handicap?

And if your "wrongest" handicap puts you into a higher division than you should be? You'd clean up.
If you have little faith in the handicap system then designing an alternative that intrinsically relies upon it is probably not the way to go.

Either way I was just saying that I wouldn't mind playing against better players than myself.

So if someone off 13 who can sometimes play well below it and 'cleans up' Cat III, he wont do it again the following comp as he would be in Cat II.

yes as i have also a 6. If you play off scratch in Cat 1, 2, 3 etc then the lowest handicaps will clean up all the time. How can the guys of 20 compete reguarly with the 13s at the low end of cat 3? Same with cat 2.

The same way they do when they shoot net 65s or 43 s/ford points in normal comps every week/month

I'd go for it once or twice a season. I played in the scratch knockout last season to test myself against low handicap golfers.

Obviously not every comp but maybe one or two a year.
I did think about the 5.5 guy staying at 5.5 but he/she would still be chopped as normal if under CSS

We had it several times a year at 1 club that was divided into Divisions anyway. Worked Ok but not universally popular. Easier when comp fees were a fixed amount rather than selecting which bits to enter.

surely ALL clubs the Championship is scratch!

some do have a handicap champion as well but the major trophy must be scratch

Nope not the case from my 5 years of playing in them in NZ when played in CAT's , very easy for a 6 to shoot 3 over and a 12 to shoot 3 under :thup:

Surely the longer you do it those with "dodgy handicaps" and who play better than their category and win will get a cut and so get promoted to the next category and eventually get to their true figure. Bit fairer and less places to hide

Can't see the point in having a separate comp for it ... highly likely to be poorly subscribed, which leads to lower winnings, which leads to being even more poorly subscribed etc etc

Most are, but some clubs play a best gross and net Champion which in my opinion is fair. You often see the same one or two players picking it up year after year so that the field gets very small.
