On a similar theme to the other thread about scratch comps but.....
Would this idea be of any interest?

I know most clubs have their comps divided into divisions so 0-12, 13-20 and 21-28 for example but would the idea of playing off scratch in your own division appeal or even divided up into Cat I-4 so those off 0-5 compete against each other with no shots, Cat II the same and so on?
That way, you only compete against those with a similar h/cap but with no shots given or received in your division.
Lowest gross in your division wins.
The idea would also have all the money taken as entry fees for each division awarded ONLY to that division.

I like the idea Bob, so me being 15, i play Vs guys between 13-20 but we are all off scratch, none of this 2 shots a hole nonsense! Where do i sign up?

We have that alot Bob . Senior scratch is up to 4 , junior scratch is 5-9 , intermediate is 9- something .. i played a lot of junior scratch events last year

Surely this is a flawed concept in that you are trying to do away with handicaps but then use the handicaps to work out which category each player plays in.

To some there would be an incentive to stay at 5.5 per se rather than be cut to be 5.4 so that they stay as the big fish in cat 2 rather than having no chance in cat 1.

Not sure this is any improvement over having separate handicap category winners in each medal comp

I think it would work better with categories rather than divisions. At our club the divisions are separated to try and get an even amount in each division and is very often Div 1 is + up to 9 Div 2 is 10 -14 Div 3 is 15 - 28 so division 3 could struggle. I'd be happy with category match play though.

Its just an addition tho rather than a replacement , couldnt see it working as a replacement for the very reasons you state ,

scratch comps like this are very popular and well supported over here

Obviously not every comp but maybe one or two a year.
I did think about the 5.5 guy staying at 5.5 but he/she would still be chopped as normal if under CSS

Top golfer tour over here goes on scratch cups , it piggybacks existing clubs scratch cups up & down the country awarding . points for playing and ranking points for top finishers then has an end of season final , time sheets always full for the comps

I like the idea, although a 12 handicapper like myself would be in the worst spot here- competing with scratch golfers.

However, I'd still be happy competing and finding it difficult in the higher division...rather than winning a lower division.

Bit like the footie I suppose!

I think you missed the point dude, you would be playing off scratch against people who have a handicap of 11-20 for arguments sake, so in fairness you have the best position to do well!

This is why I thought I'd be in the worst position...

Either way I was just saying that I wouldn't mind playing against better players than myself.
