Rather than be dependent on existing songs, which tend to have dated lyrics that can make you cringe, why not commission a new anthem? I'd like the same for the UK anthem. Let's have something more up to date.

I remember Scotland the brave at the football. Great tune but nobody knew the words. Then we copied the rugby and changed to FOS. That's a great song but not sure it works as an anthem.
Personally would like to see someone pen some decent lyrics to Highland Cathedral and go from there. That's a tune to rouse anyone.

Some decent lyrics that aren't anti-English, what a great idea.
The UK could also do with an anthem that isn't about one individual, but the whole country, one that roused a nation. No mention of historical battles, invasions, or other oppressive incidents.

In sporting terms yes it is.
It shouldn't be hard to do an all encompassing anthem. If you don't tie it to historical events, talk about people coming together etc, not a problem.
I don't want to mess up this thread, it's about Scottish football. I'll start a new one.

Really? I must have imagined that Scotland, Wales and N Ireland have their own international football teams. Not to mention rugby, cricket etc etc
It doesn't need to go down that road but clearly, if it does then it will get closed. Am I being naive on this?

Or ask Dougie MacLean to tweak the words of his Caledonia - most of us know the tune…and if not - it’s easy. As an exile the words have meaning for me, but a tweak of the words to be less reflective and ’longing’ would work for me.
FoS is beautiful when sung as a quiet reflective ballad as Roy Williamson wrote it, and as the Corries originally sang it - considerably less moving when bawled out as an ‘anthem’.
